Christophe Oriol (Casino) chose the right stage to win when he took control of Stage 1 of the Critérium du Dauphiné, raced over 208 kms between Autun and La Tour-de-Salvagny, near to Lyon. Originally from Oullins, in the southern suburbs of Lyon, 26-year old Oriol achieved his first success since turning professional in September 1997. This was also the 28th victory for the Casino team this season a fact which didn't escape the manager Vincent Lavenu.

Oriol is a slight man (1.81 metres and only 65 kgs) who admits that he spends his days on the bike "working at the back for the team." This time, he benefitted from the intense activity of the team in the last 30 minutes.

Benoît Salmon, one of his team leaders attacked on the côte de Pommiers, just after Villefranche-sur-Saône, about 28 kms from the finish. He won the last Midi-Libre and was one of the favourites to win here. His initiative brought him a 40 seconds gap and immediately provoked a reaction from American Lance Armstrong who was wearing the yellow and blue leader's jersey. He got the US Postal team moving and was joined by Cofidis (protecting the interests of fellow American Bobby Julich Frenchman Christophe Rinero).

Salmon was caught with 5 kms to go and at that time Oriol took his chance. "I was advantaged by the events. I was getting ready to set up the sprint for Stéphane Barthe." But Oriol, was able to make his own gap over a small hill and maintained 200 metres and 7 seconds on the peloton being controlled by Christophe Capelle. Armstrong maintained his lead but Casino have confirmed their ambitions and Oriol is now in 6th overall.

The parcours today was undulating through the hills of Beaujolais and early action was confined to the ambitions of the two Davids of Cofidis - Scot David Miller and Frenchman David Moncoutié. The latter eventually succumbed to stomach problems.

Tomorrow the riders encounter Stage 2 over 164 kms. The main difficulty will be the Cat 3 côte de la Croix-Régis which comes 40 kms before the end.
