Preview:

The Volta a Catalunya takes the riders through 8 stages and constitutes a major preparation race for riders keen to do well in the Tour de France which starts on July 3. The Spaniards Abraham Olano (ONCE) and Fernando Escartin (Kelme), Swiss rider Alex Zulle (Banesto) and the Frenchman Laurent Brochard (Festina) start as the favourites. Given the climbs an outsider for overall honours is the Italian Paolo Savoldelli (Saeco), who was the revelation in the recently completed Giro (2nd on GC). Another chance is the Colombian Hernan Buenahora (Vitalicio), who won in 1998. The flat stages are set up for the sprinters and Italian Mario Cipollini will resume battle with German Erik Zabel and Dutch rider Jeroen Blijlevens.

The tough stages are the 4th and 6th, each of which have 2 Cat 1 climbs. The last stage is a 14.2 kms ITT which ends on the col de La Rabassa in Andorra.

The 15 teams that have entered are Vitalicio Seguros, Kelme-Costa Blanca, Banesto, ONCE-Deutsche Bank, Euskaltel-Euskadi, Festina-Lotus, Fuenlabrada, Telekom, Mercatone Uno-Bianchi, Mapei-Quick Step, Saeco-Cannondale, Lampre-Daikin, TVM-Farm Frites, Lotto-Mobistar, and US Postal Service.
