Race Report:

There were 119 riders at the start at 10.50. Two riders who failed to finish within the time limit yesterday - Ferretti and Hostasova did not start. Also Kolarova and Marion Brauen did not start as a result of injuries after a stage 1 crash. Just before the first premie sprint at Montericcardo and an attack led by Spanish rider Fatima Blazquez (Team Alfa Lum-William Aurora) and Italian Roberta Bonanomi (Acca Due O Lorena Camicie) went away and they quickly built a 35 second gap. The sprint at Montericcardo (km 31.1) went to Fatima Blazquez followed by Roberta Bonanomi with Italian Sigrid Corneo (Master Automazione Molteni Record) third at 0.35. The average speed for the first hour was 32.9 km/h. By km 40 the gap was 1.40 and that was the maximum difference. 6 kms later it was down to 1.05.

The second premie sprint at Montemaggiore al Metauro (km 52.6) went in the same order as the first Blazquez, Bonanomi then Corneo (at 1.09). By the time they were half way up the climb the gap was down to 0.50 and closing. The chase was organised and the difference was down to 0.37 at km 73.

By km 76.1 the break was over. At Corinaldo-Cappuccini (km 76.1) the next premie sprint went to Lithuanian Edita Pucinskaite (Acca Due O Lorena Camice), then Finn Pia Sundstedt (Gas Sport Team) with Italian Paola Bresolin (S.C. Master Automazione Molteni Record) third. For the next several kms the peloton remained complete. The next sprint at Belvedere Ostrense was won by Luisiana Pegoraro (Edilsavino) then Veronesi (Smr, Alfa Lum) with Australian Hansley (Aus) third. Pegoraro had broken and held a narrow 0.08 gap but was soon caught after the sprint. The H20 team then lifted the pace. An attack by 3 riders 6 kms out - German Hohlfeld (Gas Sport Team), Italian Pregnolato (H2O) and Italian Pegoraro (Edilvavino) went away but the efforts were in vain. Another attack from the leader Marion Clignet (Mista Svizzera) went 2 kms out and she nearly succeeded. She was caught 700m from the line.

In the sprint, it was German Petra Rossner taking the prize with a time of 3.28.55 (avs 34.808 km/h) ahead of Zinaida Stahurskaya (Lit, H2O Lorena), Urbonaite (Lit), Felloni, Blasquez, Saprykina, Hohlfeld, Cristofoli, Clignet and Guerrero. Zita Urbonaite took the pink leader's jersey.

Kristy Scrymgeour Reports from the Australian Team:

Stage two was not a mountain stage. However it was not without hills. In fact I think there was only about 15km of flat in the whole race. 10km at the beginning and 5km at the end. The bunch split quite early in the race, on a category 2 climb. From that moment forward I did not really see what happened at the front of the race, but apparently about 35 riders came in together and the bunch kick was won by Petra Rosner. Sarah Carrigan was our best placed rider, riding extremely well to finish in a small bunch only 6mins down.
