Report:Danish rider Jesper Skibby (Team Home-Jack & Jones) defied the forecasts of a mass sprint to win from his breakaway partners - Swede Michael Lafis (TVM-Farm Frites) and Spaniard Francisco Mancebo (Banesto). The three made their move in the last kms of the race. 106 riders started and had to complete 12 laps of an almost flat 15.7 kms circuit for 188 kms. The first five laps passed without incident. On lap 6, a group of 14 went off the front which included four ONCE riders. They held a lead of 40 seconds on the peloton. This group was eventually caught and immediately another group of 22 riders formed at the front, including Oscar Sevilla and Coque Uría (both from Kelme), Unai Etxebarria (Euskaltel) and José María Jiménez (Banesto). Jiménez abandoned later on. They were caught on lap 8 after building a lead of around 1 minute. As lap 9 began a group of 8 riders attacked - Peter Luttenberger and Gaizka Lejarreta (ONCE-Deustche Bank), Aitor Osa and Francisco Mancebo (Banesto), Hans de Clercq and Roger Hammond (Palmans-Ideal), Michael Lafis (TVM-Farm Frites) and Jesper Skibby. By the end of lap 10 they had 2 minutes on the peloton. On the last lap, Vitalicio and Festina were working hard to close down the breakaway. As the gap narrowed Skibby attacked on the climb of Txomintxu, with 10 kms to go, taking with him Lafis and Mancebo. The trio defied the chase down and in the final sprint it was Skibby who was the quickest. Getxo, 184 kms:AVS: 43.003 km/h 1. Jesper Skibby (Den) Team Home-Jack & Jones 4.22.52 2.
