Stage 1, Launceston Prologue, 8.1 kms:

20-year old local Nathan Clarke upstaged 1998 winner Cadel Evans in the Prologue of the Tour of Tasmania over a hilly 8.1 kms parcourse. and now will wear the yellow jersey into the first road stage from Launceston to Devenport on Thursday.

The Tour started with the riders from the Jayco Victorian Institute of Sport cycling team arriving in Tasmania only to find they did not have any bikes. The VIS coach had to convince the chief commissaire George Nelson that the bikes were checked in at Melbourne. The riders were allowed to start and were loaned bikes from other riders.

Stage 2, Launceston - St. Helens:

Overnight leader Nathan Clarke was blown out of the Tour today after being dropped on the first KOM, which came at the 40.9 kms mark. The riders were confronted with what was described as the worst storm ever encountered on this Tour with hail and driving rain. The conditions were reminiscent of the 1967 edition of the Tour of the North, which was over the same roads. The only difference between today and that day in 1967 was that it was August then and you might have expected it to be cold.

A break of 8 finally went as the storm struck and the peloton split. Earlier, Dutch rider Pelle Kil had dominated the KOM's and had set up the two Abom riders who finally figured prominently in the break. With a few kms to go, Harm Jansen and Matthew Wallace stole clear and contested the sprint with the Dutchman easily winning. The Tour is now down to 8 riders. Tomorrow, it is Mt. Wellington.

Stage 4, Salamanca Place Criterium, Hobart, 1 hour:

Victorian Cadel Evans repeated his 1998 victory in the Tour of Tasmania by finishing safely in the bunch. The final stage was a showcase criterium in Hobart's shoreside Salamanca Place. The fast, dead-flat circuit saw some furious racing with Dutch ride Harm Jansen winning from his fellow breakaway partners Alan Davis (Qld), Herbert Donovan (Vic), Brad Davidson (Vic) and Morgan Fox (Ire). The sprint was simplified by a fall (Donovan and Fox) into the last corner. Jansen and Davis were left and a photo-finish gave it to Jansen.
