With only one race left in the competition, fellow Belgian, Bart Wellens, who has had some memorable battles with Nijs in the Under-23 category in World Championships over the last two years, is sitting in second overall some 28 points behind.Nijs won the sprint in Round 10 from veteran Dutchman Adri Van der Poel. The race was a warm-up for the World Championships which will be held in Poprad, Slovakia next Sunday. It was able to attract the "Who's who" of cyclocross in Europe and the big crowd in Wetzikon was not disappointed. Nijs and Van der Poel battled it out for the first 9 laps with neither able to drop the other. As they came into the sprint, it was the Under-23 World Champion Sven Nijs who held of the fast finishing Dutchman. Van der Poel had won here last year. World Champion Mario de Clercq profited from a wheel problem encountered by Swiss rider Beat Wabel to take third place. The form rider in the latter part of the season, Swiss rider Thomas Frischknecht was fifth. Beat Wabel was particularly a victim of bad luck. On lap 8, with one to go, he looked to have third place sealed. On a sharp bend he stumbled and his wheel was clogged with dirt and grass and he had to run for 500 metres before he could change his bike. Mario de Clercq passed him while he was running and was never caught. Despite being disappointed with the outcome, Wabel was confident of a good showing at the World's next weekend. Last Saturday, he had a heavy fall in the Belgian cross event at Vossem and he suffered constant pain in the final World Cup round in Nommay the next day. He had a lot of care this week and said he was riding virtually pain-free at Wetzikon. Both Wabel and Frischknecht were with Nijs and Van der Poel for some of the race. But Frischknecht chose the wrong tyres for the parcours. They were clogged from the start and he found it hard matching the speed of Nijs and Van der Poel. Frischknecht fell on lap 5 and lost contact at that point. His fifth place also augurs well for next weekend. Round 10, Wetzikon, 9 laps1. Sven Nijs (Bel) Rabobank 58.41 2.
