After only 30 minutes of racing, 28-year old German rider Lars Teutenberg had a serious fall when his front forks exploded and he hit the track head-first. He is now in hospital with bad concussion. His partner, fellow German Andreas Beikirch did not continue. Last year, Teutenberg won the Ronde van Thüringen.

Adriano Baffi - (Italy), born August 7, 1962

Turned professional in 1987 and has raced 62 6-Day races (six times in Bremen) for 11 victories. He is also a successful road rider.

Marco Villa - (Italy), born February 8, 1969

He started slowly in 6-Day racing but the breakthrough came in 1995-96 when he was contracted to ride in 9 events and won 3. He has now raced in 53 6-Day races with 13 victories. He also has had a successful racing relationship with Silvio Martinello and with him won track world championships in 1995 and 1996.

Andreas Kappes - (Germany), born December 23, 1965

He turned professional in 1987 and lives in Cologne. He has raced in 65 6-Day races with 17 victories. He has won at Bremen several times - 1989 (with Hermann), 1991 and 1992 (with De Wilde), 1994 (with Clark) and 1997 (with Carsten Wolf). In 1998, he rode with Baffi and was beaten in the last sprint by the Danish pair of Veggerby/Madsen.

Etienne De Wilde - (Belgium), born March 23, 1958

One of the enduring personalities of 6-Day racing. He is still in top form even though he is now 40 years of age. He was the world points champion in 1993, and has raced in 169 6-Day races (13 times in Bremen) for 37 victories. He won at Bremen in 1991 and 1992 (with Kappes). He has also had a fabulous career as a road rider winning many races. In 1998, he won the world madison championship at Bordeaux with Australian Matthew Gilmore.

Bruno Risi - (Switzerland), born September 6, 1968

He has been racing since 1981 butonly turned professional in 1991. He won the 1992 and 1994 world points championship after winning the amateur version of this title in 1991. He has raced 77 6-Day races and won 20. His most successful season was in 1993-94 with 5 victories, but in 1994-95 he won 4, and in 1995-96 2. He has been in top form so far this season. With partner Kurt Betschart he has won 3 races this year - Herning, Munich and Zurich. In 1995, he and Betschart won the European madison championship, and came second in that race in 1996.

Kurt Betschart - (Switzerland), born August 25, 1968

His amateur and professional career has mirrored his partner Bruno Risi. Of the 79 6-Day races he has competed in he has won 20. The partnership has put them in second-place on the team winner's list.

Jimmy Madsen - (Denmark), born January 4, 1969

He made his big breakthrough in 6-Day racing in 1994-95 when won in Copenhagen with Danny Clark. Since then he has won 6 times. He started bike racing in 1980 and has won bronze medals at the 1992 Olympics and the 1993 World Championships. His biggest professional victory came in 1996 where he partnered Veggerby in Zurich to take the European title in the madison. They repeated the success in 1998. This season he has been on the podium in every race he has entered - 2nd at Herning, Leipzig, and Berlin, and 3rd in Dortmund, Gent, Munich and Zurich.

Tayeb Braikia - (Denmark), born March 8, 1974

The new face of 6-Day racing. He has race 18 6-Day races with one victory. In 1997 he was the Danish madison champion.

Jens Lehmann - (Germany), born December 19, 1967

As an amateur he was extremely successful - 1991 world pursuit champion, 1991 and 1994 world team pursuit champion, 1992 Olympic team pursuit gold medal, 1992 silver in Olympic pursuit. He has been a multiple winner of the German pursuit and team pursuit title. Since turning professional in 1994 he has not yet won a 6-Day race. He came close with Scott McGrory this year in Leipzig.

Andrea Collinelli - (Italy) born July 2, 1969

He has been to Bremen 2 time before. He began his 6-Day career in 1996 at Bordeaux and Grenoble. He has raced 20 6-Day events since for 2 victories. He has won silver medals in the World pursuit championships in 1995 and 1996 and a bronze in 1997.

Peter Van Petegem - (Belgium) born January 18, 1970

He has been absent from 6-Day racing for 4 years. In 1998, he celebrated his largest professional successfuls with a second place in the World's road race in Valkenburg. He still took a Belgian omnium track title at Gent. He has twice won the classic Het Volk. He has participated in 6 6-Day races with a best placing of 3rd at Gent in 1994. He is a top rider in the World Cup on the road.

Scott McGrory - (Australia), born December 12, 1969

The talented Australian professional has raced in 19 6-Day races without success. But he partnered the legendary Australian Danny Clark to two Australian madison championships (1995 and 1996). admitted to that in the best way, came in its homeland already twice

Andreas Walzer - (Germany), born May 20, 1970

The 28-year old had his biggest success in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics when he was part of the winning Olympic pursuit team. He has raced in 21 6-Day races without success.

Gerd Dörich - (Germany), born February 14, 1968

One of the few young German riders who has been able to gain a foothold in 6-Day racing in recent years. He has raced in 80 6-Day races since 1990 without victory.

Carsten Wolf - (Germany), born August 26, 1964

A junior world champion in 1982, and gold medallist in the team pursuit in 1989 and 1990. He has raced 75 6-Day races with 4 victories. He has lived in Berlin since the autumn of 1998.

Juan Llaneras - (Spain), born May 17, 1969

The Spaniard is still relatively new to 6-Day racing but has had a successful start. He won the World points championship in 1996 and had some high placings at the Atlanta Olympics (8th madison, 6th points, 5th teams pursuit). He has raced 17 6-Day races with his best placing being a third in Zurich with Baffie and third in Medelien with Alzamora.

Stefan Steinweg - (Germany), born February 24, 1969

He won a junior world points championship at Casablanca. As an amateur he won gold in the team pursuit at the Worlds in Stuttgart and Barcelona (1972). He won the World Cup in the pursuit in 1992. He has raced in 22 6-Day races without victory. His best result is in 1996 at Munich where he came 10th with Dortmund rider Thorsten Schmidt.

Erik Weißpfennig - (Germany), born August 13, 1969

The huge 1.91 metre tall rider won the amateur 6-Day race at Bremen in 1994. He was a silver medallist in the team pursuit at the Worlds in 1990. He has won German madison championships with Stefan Steinweg. He has several German amateur titles and won the amateur 6-Day race at Berlin in 1990, and in 1993 at Cologne and Stuttgart. He has raced 28 6-Day races as a professional without victory to date.

Jakob Piil - (Denmark), born March 9, 1973

One of the successful Danish riders now racing on the 6-Day circuit. He was 5th as a professional in the madison with Olsen at the 1995 World Championships (Colombia). He initially only rode the Danish 6-Day races (Herning and Copenhagen) and promoters were very impressed with his performances. He then rode in Gent (6th with Matthew Gilmore), Zurich and Bremen. In 1997, he won his first 6-Day race with compatriot Tayeb Braikia at Grenoble. W In the European championships he was 7th in 1995 and 11 in 1996. He has now raced 19 6-Day races.

Frank Corvers - (Belgium) born November 12, 1969

The Belgian has made a reputation on the road but has had some success on the track up to now. He was the winner in 1993 of the madison at Gent, the 1994 winner of the amateur 6-Day race at Antwerp, the 1995 winner of the GP d'Isbergues and second in Paris-Bourges. In 1997, he rode for Team Telekom but was not retained in 1998. He rode for the Belgian Palmans team in 1998. He has ridden 20 6-Day races without a victory.

Mario Vonhof - (Germany), born July 7, 1975

The youngest rider in the race and he has raced in 16 6-Day races without a victory.

Frank Kowatschitsch - (Germany), born May 5, 1974

He won the amateur 6-Day race at Dortmund in 1997 and the amateur race at Bremen in 1998. He has also had a successful partnership with Erik Weißpfennig in German track racing. He has raced 8 6-Day events.

Andreas Beikirch - (Germany), born March 29, 1970

He won a junior world championship in 1993 in the points race and turned professional last year. He has ridden 27 6-Day races without a victory. In 1996, he was 6th with Doerich in the European madison championships.

Lars Teutenberg - (Germany), born September 2, 1970

He is finding it hard to breakthrough for his first professional 6-Day victory. The rider from Dusselforf turned professional in November 1993 and has raced 27 6-Day events. His best placing has been a 5th at Cologne in 1996 with Torsten Schmidt. He was the 1993 German derny champion and has had high placings in the German points championships. He won the Tour of Thuringan in 1998 on the road.
