All reporting for the Bay Classic Criteriums is coming from Jenny Kisler who provides us with Victorian racing news regularly. Thanks very much for her great effort. Martin Hardy is also sending on-the-spot reports.

Stage 1, Williamstown, January 6

Points are awarded for the first three in the intermediate sprints towards the sprint jersey, and to the first ten overall towards the overall title.

Women

An early attack by Karen Barrow resulted in her taking out the first sprint. She looked threatening and had a large gap. However, she was brought back and her teammate Liz Tadich attacked. This attack was also brought back by a lot of work from the English team (including Yvonne McGregor) and Kathy Watt. Anna Wilson took the second sprint. Another attack by Anna Wilson followed and she stayed clear until the finish with Kathy Watt narrowly beating Joanne Robinson for second.

Sprint 1: Karen Barrow, Anna Wilson
Sprint 2: Anna Wilson, Joanne Robinson

B Grade Men:

A huge field of over 100 riders started in the B grade event. A couple of early falls on the first corner of the circuit ruled a few riders out of overall contention (a few buckled wheels and a bit of skin lost!) The field stayed pretty much together for the entire race, although a few attacks were attempted. In the closing stages a break was made by Trent Perry. He was able to stay clear, although the field was catching him rapidly towards the end.

Overall:

 1. Trent Perry
 2. Peter Milostic

Men:

The line up for the men's event included Tour de France riders Stuart O'Grady, Henk Vogels, Magnus Backstedt, Scott Sunderland and Robbie McEwen.

The tip from Robbie McEwen was to be at the front early. And as things worked out he was right!! An early crash (in the tight first corner again) brought down a couple of riders including Brett Aitken. He was able to get back into the field quickly. After this a dangerous break formed, containing Ben Brooks, Graeme Brown, David McKenzie and Robbie McEwen. Stuart O'Grady also rode across the gap to join them. David McKenzie won the first sprint with O'Grady in second. As the laps went by the gap was getting bigger. Magnus Backstedt was doing a lot of work on the front of the bunch with Henk Vogels. Stuart O'Grady took the second sprint from McKenzie. The third sprint was made difficult for the judges as the breakaway group had caught the main field. A group of four had also attacked at the same time the breakaways caught the field. The third sprint was won by O'Grady.

At this point there were three groups on the road - the breakaways, the main field (together although on different laps) and the chasing group. The main field and chase group were pulled out with two laps to go - after places 6-10 were decided. The breakaways then had two laps to sort themselves out with McKenzie coming into the home straight in front with McEwen flying up behind him. In the end it went to a photo with McKenzie the winner, McEwen second and O'Grady third.

Brian Farrell, Victorian cycling photographer has sent me a photo of the disputed finish.

Stage 2, Portarlington, January 7

B Grade:

The main field stayed together for most of the race with few serious attacks. Just before the second sprint two riders (Adam Cox and Glenn Stojanow) were able to get clear and after working well together had a gap of 23 seconds by the finish line. Over the last few laps Stojanow was doing most of the work and on the last lap although Cox was able to come round him he sat up and waved Stojanow through for the victory.

Sprint 1 Gene Bates, Peter Milostic, Cameron Jennings
Sprint 2 Glenn Stojanow, Adam Cox, Peter Milostic

 1. Glenn Stojanow (NSW)
 2. Adam Cox
 3. Tim Decker

As to the overall, Jenny reports that there was some confusion and the judges really didn't have any idea!!!! However they announced Stojanow to have the overall lead with Milostic in second.

Women:

The women's race started quickly with several riders losing contact on the first lap and on the first attempt of the tough climb on this circuit!!! After several laps the women's field of 70 riders had decreased in number but the bunch remained together. Liz Tadich made her move after 12 minutes of the 45 minute race. She rode clear and spent a few laps in front of the field before being joined by Alayna Burns. Burns won the first sprint from Tadich and the two worked well and were able to establish a good gap to the field (which had also lost a few more riders due to the pace and toughness of the circuit). Burns won the second sprint from Tadich, mainly due to Liz's reluctance in the last corner leading in to the home straight (probably due to the fact that she ran off the course here twice last year!). The bunch looked like they would catch the breakaways but after a couple of good laps from Tadich the gap increased again. The bunch contained most of the strong riders and included Kathy Watt, Anna Wilson, Yvonne McGregor, Lyn Nixon, Mary Grigson, Tracy Gaudrey, Margaret Hemsley, Sara Carrigan, Sandra Smith, Alison Wright and a couple of others. In the final sprint Alayna Burns was too strong for Liz Tadich, despite a pretty good sprint by Liz out of the last corner, and Anna Wilson comfortably out sprinted Kathy Watt for third some 15-20 seconds back.

Men:

Again the top international riders lead the race early and were pushing the pace. An early attack containing Robbie McEwen, Stuart O'Grady and David McKenzie threatened to go clear. Although this was brought back, and a crash on the first corner helped, gaps formed in the field with four distinct groups forming on the road. The first sprint was won by McKenzie from O'Grady and Jenner. In the other groups, Henk Vogels was doing a lot of work in the second group and Nick Gates was leading the third. While this was happening Allan Iacuone, Magnus Backstedt and Ben Brooks threatened to go away.

After bringing himself up to the second group on the road, Nick Gates pulled out. Henk Vogels continued to work hard in the second group, reattaching to the leaders before the second sprint. Meanwhile at the front Robbie McEwen had attacked and established a very handy lead of about 10 seconds over the field. After maintaining this lead for 5 or 6 laps McEwen was beginning to tire and relentless work from Rogers (x2), O'Grady, Gono, Brooks, Brown, Drew and Iacuone and a few others brought the bunch back into contact. Allan Iacuone leapt across the gap on the sprint lap and was able to take the points from McEwen.

The field then stayed together with Vogels, Backstedt and a few others losing contact. Vogels worked hard trying to get back onto the group but couldn't do it and was not impressed that he may have brought a couple of guys up to the lead group, and as he'd done all the work they were quite fresh! Peter Rogers attempted a breakaway next and was able to take out the third sprint from Graeme Brown but he was also reeled in.

With five laps to go McKenzie went clear. He established a gap that none of the bunch seemed eager to close and in the end was a clear winner....an attempt to make up for yesterday's fiasco, and as McEwen put it, "he got his revenge!" McEwen lead the field in for second, with Graeme Brown taking third from Rogers and O'Grady.

Stage 3, Torquay, January 7

Short course (700m) and very fast.

B grade:

Three riders (Gene Bates, Michael Tuck, Cameron Jennings) managed to get away very early on in the race. The chase started just before the second sprint and a group of five got away from the field (Tim Bennett, Peter Milostic, Glenn Stojanow, Trent Perry, Ben Lindsay). The leading three fought out both sprints and caught the field (not an easy thing to do with very strong winds). With five laps to go the chasing five had also lapped the field, so with two laps to go they were pulled out of the race. The final sprint had Tim Bennett too strong for the other riders with Gene Bates in second and Trent Perry third. Glenn Stojanow retained the overall lead.

Sprint 1 Gene Bates, Cameron Jennings, Michael Tuck
Sprint 2 Cameron Jennings, Gene Bates, Michael Tuck

 1. Tim Bennett
 2. Gene Bates
 3. Trent Perry

Overall leader Glenn Stojanow

Women:

Karen Barrow made a very early attack on the first lap. She was able to stay clear of the field and had built up a nice lead by the first sprint. By the second sprint her lead was decreasing rapidly and she was swept up just after the sprint. After she was caught Liz Tadich attacked, a move that worked well for the Jayco team (and Anna Wilson) during the first stage at Williamstown. However this time Liz was simply too strong for the field and had the length of the front straight lead with five laps to go. The gap didn't change much and Tadich won easily. Sandra Smith and Lucy Tyler-Sharman fought out the minor places with Anna Wilson in fourth.

Men:

The attacks started early in the men's race but no-one seemed to be able to get a gap and maintain it. An early crash held up a few riders, and after their lap out, a few riders like Nick Gates were able to get back into the race in a much better position. David McKenzie won the first sprint. Stuart O'Grady attempted an escape that was brought back. Then it was Jamie Carney on the attack. He was brought back but went in one of the following attacks and took out the second sprint. Again the attacks were all brought back. Collin Sturgess was the next to go, Jamie Carney tried again, Henk Vogels tried, as did Magnus Backstedt but no-one could get away. Sturgess won the third sprint, again on attack with Allan Iacuone this time. As the attacks in the closing laps were brought back Carney went again with Sturgess and this time, with some assistance from teammate Nick Gates on the front of the peleton slowing down the field (and also leading out Robbie McEwen for the sprint), they were able to stay away. Carney won the sprint from Sturgess with McEwen and McKenzie continuing their close finishes for McEwen to take third. McEwen now has a one point lead in the overall from McKenzie.

Women:

A very early attack by Karen Barrow followed the pattern of the earlier races. After a couple of laps Anna Wilson sprinted across the gap and the two worked well together to increase their lead. However just before the first sprint Karen Barrow sat up and rejoined the field. This left Anna alone at the front, about 300m ahead of the rest. Anna was able to increase this lead as the race continued and by the end was about half a lap up on the bunch. This meant Anna regained the overall lead from her teammate Liz Tadich.

Men:

An early attack by Ben Brooks looked good, until he fell in one of the corners. After he rejoined the race, he attacked again. Irishman Morgan Fox jumped across the gap and the two worked well to set up a good break. Brooks took the first sprint. They were able to stay clear for a few laps, meanwhile in the bunch both Shane Kelly and Scott Sunderland had taken a turn on the front. The attackers were reeled in and Stuart Tyrell attacked, and also took the second sprint. Corey Sweet was then on the attack, continuing his consistent attacking moves from earlier in the week. Duncan Smith took the third sprint while in a dangerous break that also contained Stuart O’Grady and Jamie Carney. Smith was eventually recalled to the bunch to help his teammates chase for McKenzie in the sprint. The break was brought back, Nick Gates and Henk Vogels had a turn on the front and Jamie Carney attacked again. With a few laps to go, following a helpful shove from Nick Gates, Jamie Carney attacked. The idea of this was to take some of the sprint from Stuart O’Grady’s legs and it worked very effectively!! (Not that Jamie was too impressed about it at the time!!) The bunch came into the final straight together, with Rik McCaig crashing on the final bend, and Robbie McEwen leading the field home to a comfortable win. Last year’s series winner, Brett Aitken also appeared in the final sprint for the first time.

Stage 5, St. Kilda Esplanade, January 10

This is the final day of the event. The riders then move to Mt. Buller for the Mt. Buller Tour.

B Grade:

The field stayed as a bunch with few attacks and none serious. Tim Bennett took second behind Geoff Hopkins to repeat his overall win of last year.

Sprint 1 Matthew Miller, Jerone Walters, Michael Walsh
Sprint 2 Gene Bates

 1. Geoff Hopkins
 2. Tim Bennett
 3. Gene Bates

Most Aggressive Rider - Leigh de Luca
Overall Winner - Tim Bennett

Men:

The first sprint was won by Michael Fitzgerald from Graeme Brown. Attacks were attempting to go clear but nothing was succeeding. Magnus Backstedt took the second sprint and Graeme Brown the third. This suited McKenzie perfectly as only O’Grady could take that title from him. Jamie Carney was again present at the front keeping the pace high, and making sure no-one was going to get clear, any move by O’Grady was followed by Carney. Into five laps to go, Nick Gates and Shane Kelly were at the back of the field talking. Next lap around they were on the front doing some hard work! With four to go Matt Wilson was unlucky to puncture and the sprinters were getting ready. In the final sprint Robbie McEwen showed his class, and why he is rated one of the best in the world, taking the sprint easily from Graeme Brown, with David McKenzie much further down the field. It was McEwen’s third victory for the series.

And.....Robbie McEwen was heading home to Queensland for some sun and surfing. He was looking forward to a bit of a break before returning to Europe next Sunday (and thus missing next Sunday’s Australian title). Jamie Carney is also returning to America on Tuesday and not staying around for any of the other summer cycling events that are on.

Karen Barrow again attacked early but nothing came of the move. Alayna Burns won the first sprint. Karen Barrow and Melanie Szubrient (the British champion) fell in one of the corners and both retired from the race. The second sprint was won by Anna Wilson, but Alayna Burns took second to take the Sprint title. In the final sprint Anna Wilson was too strong for the other riders and Liz Tadich put in a good sprint to take second. This was Anna’s third win for the series.

Martin Hardy reports

Day 1, Williamstown

Robbie McEwen won a close sprint from David McKenzie and Stuart O'Grady after the initial judges decision was reversed after the viewing of the video tape. The breakaway group of five riders had lapped most of the field  10 minutes before the end of the race. Graeme Brown and Ben Brooks of NSWIS  were the other two members of the break which commenced in the seventh lap of the race. The only riders not to be lapped were Magnus Backstedt (Credit Agricole/Skilled) Alan Iacuone (Jayco/VIS), Paul Rodanback (ACTIS) and Herbert Donivan (Mildara Blass) who escaped off the front of the bunch shortly before they were caught by the breakaway. Iacuone  outsprinted Backstedt for sixth place.

The VIS women showed of their strength and tactical prowess yet again.  Karen Barrow (VIS) attacked first taking the first sprint lap after gaining a lead of 12 seconds on the peloton. Next to go was Liz Tadich (VIS), she was chased by Alayna Burns (SA), Yvonne McGregor (GB) leading the bunch. Just before the final sprint lap Anna Wilson appeared in the finishing straight 3 seconds ahead of the peloton with Yvonne McGregor and Kathy Watt (Giant) driving the bunch in vain. Mary Grigson, Alayna Burns and Joanne Robinson (SA) all leant their weight to chase down Anna Wilson who eventually  won the race finishing 15 seconds in front of the bunch sprint for second. She had sat for long periods on Kathy Watt's wheel while Watt and McGregor had done all the work. As with the men's race the judges decison for second was reversed after viewing the video, giving the hardworking Joanne Robinson second.
