Last year, the Dutch super duo of 1997-98 - Richard Groenendaal and Adri Van der Poel - dominated the race and Groenendaal sealed the overall Trophy rankings by winning with his teammate coming second. This year Groenendaal has had a miserable season. But Van der Poel, the 39-year old veteran who is aiming to race for one more season, was the stand-out rider. He streeted the field and won alone 56 seconds ahead of the top rider for the season overall, 23-year old Belgian Sven Nijs. Nijs has been the revelation of the season having won 6 of the rounds in the Super Prestige Trophy. He went into the last round already assured of overall Trophy victory. But he still powered today trying to beat Van der Poel. The veteran Dutchman, however, has been the strong man of the end-season, and won the last round of the World Cup and now the last round of the Super Prestige Trophy. He also chalked up the bronze medal at the World's last weekend in between these victories. The weekend was good for Van der Poel as he had won the day before at Pijnacker in the Netherlands.Sven Nijs and Mario De Clercq chased Van der Poel but had to be content with the minor placings. Nijs broke clear of De Clercq on the second last lap and finished 20 seconds in front of the World Champion. Belgian Erwin Vervecken who won silver last weekend in Poprad never challenged here and came in 15th. There was considerable interest in the "show down" between De Clercq and Vervecken. But it never eventuated and confirmed De Clercq's statement last week that Vervecken had had a very inconsistent season. Round 11, Harnes, 9 laps1. Adri van der Poel (Ned) Rabobank 56.21 2.
