The 1999 Rapport Cycle Tour will be one of the hardest and closely fought editions
of the race which is in its 24th year. The local teams will be tested by a number
of international teams that have made the trip to South Africa. To add to the
attraction, the 1389 km route is tougher than ever.
The Rapport Tour starts in Pretoria's Church Square on February 25 with a short
street race. Several relatively flat stages in the Gauteng and Free State
regions precede the tougher stages. Then they head towards the mountains of the
Western Cape and the real action will begin on Stage 8 (March 3)
when the peloton has to negotiate the 224 kms journey from Montagu to Worcester over
the Karoo.
The stage is likely to decide the GC. It requires 3 Mountain pass sprints, two
of which involve 6 km-climbs. The Tour ends in Blaauwberg, Cape Town on March 6.
