Challenge Mallorca, 5 x Cat 1.4Spain, February 7-11, 1999 |
Other Stages
Stage 3, Soller - Port de Soller, 145.5 kms:Danish rider Claus Michael Moller (TVM), won Stage 3 - the Gran Premio de Sóller, of the Challenge Mallorca. This was TVMs second victory in 3 days after Jeroen Blijlevens had won the Palma criterium. Moller won ahead of his breakaway companion Francisco Cabello. The chasing bunch came in at 21 seconds and contained the new overall leader - Spaniard José Luis Rebollo (ONCE-Deutsche Bank).Abraham Olano didn't race today, but another top rider, Jan Ullrich started his season, apparently feeling better after having had a heavy cold. The stage was a very active one with numerous breaks in the peloton caused by the strong winds which punished the 182 riders at different points of the race. Like a photocopy of the previous day, members of team Kelme Costa Blanca and ONCE Deutsche Bank were the aggressive teams and were consistently putting their riders into the different breaks that occured. The first major break went at the foot of the last climb the Puig Major (Cat 2) which came with only 17 kms to go before the finish. Kelme gambled with Cabello and Javier Pascual, who both attacked hard and only Santiago Blanco and Moller were able to stay with them. The ONCE-Deutsche Bank team was late in reacting to the move and it took them more than half the climb before José Luis Rebollo was able to establish the tempo which neutralised the break. He took Igor González, Unai Osa and Belgian Peter Farazijn with him. Cabello reached the top of the Puig Major first, followed by Moller, while Pascual and Blanco were dropped and passed by a chasing quartet that was following some 40 seconds back. Cabello tried to leave Moller behind on the descent, since he knew that if they finished together he wouldn't have a chance against the Dane's sprint. Meanwhile, the chase group increased in size, which caused the leading duo's advantage to be reduced. But they were ahead enough to stay clear. Cabello, winner of the "Challenge" in 1996 and the mountain prize in the last three years, tried to surprise Moller initiating the sprint, almost at the 1 km to go banner. Moller had no problems overcoming Cabello.
