Preview

The 6th Classic Haribo, between Uzès (Gard) and Marseille, presents the usual difficulties that one would expect along the roads in the valleys of Baux de Provence. This race over 204 kms is favourable to the sprinters. 1996 winner is absent this year. Last year it was Estonian Lauri Aus who won after a long escape with Australian Stuart O'Grady for over 170 kms.

Uzes - Marseilles - 197.5 kms

Australian Stuart O'Grady (Crédit Agricole) won the 197.5 kms Classic Haribo from Swiss rider Beat Zberg and took over the lead of the Coupe de France after two races (the first being the Tour du Haut Var on Saturday). Stuart O'Grady was the great rider in this race. Last year, the Australian was part of a long break and was beaten by Lauri Aus. This year he didn't make the same mistake after initiating the breakaway at the 54 kms mark.

Around 12 riders went with O'Grady and they held a slim margin over the chasing peloton for more than 10 kms. Just as the group was about to be absorbed, the Australian attacked again and this time was followed by 15 riders who were a short distance from him. The race was helped by beneficial winds and O'Grady built a lead of around 45 seconds before Roger Legeay, the director sportif of Crédit Agricole, told him to ease up.

Behind, a counter-attack was taking place composed of Beat Zberg, Alex Vinokourov, Michael Boogerd and Xavier Jan, and they closed the gap to 18 seconds. O'Grady then waited for this group. Behind was another bunch with Jann Kirsipuu, Nicolaj Larsen (Den), Cristian Salvato (Ita), Ludo Dierecksens (Bel) and Franck Perque (Fra).

Just before the sprint, Stuart O'Grady attacked from behind, adopting the same tactic as last year, but this time he showed that he is much stronger and took the sprint.
