Lisandro Cruel (Arg) Tres Rios 7.55 Stage 10, La Paz - Circuito Papagayo - Mendoza, 180 kms:Rodrigo Gini, our South American correspondent from Brazil writes that victory went to German Torsten Schmidt (Chicky World). His teammate Martin Rittsel ended the stage in 17th position, 32 seconds behind Schmidt, but enough to retain the overall lead. A lot of new things had happened on the last stages. Before stage 7 and 7b (Time Trial), team Acceptcard decided to withdrawn the race and went home. Oficially, no reason was given for this decision but there are two versions of the story floating around - first, some say there has been an internal fight as to who should be the team leader, second, a disagreement with the organizers, who are not respecting the rules of maximum time and allowing slower cyclists to continue on the race. In San Luis, local cyclists made a huge protest. The State government had promised the budget to the local club to be on La Vuelta, but the money disappeared. The race has become beset with other problems. It was discovered the night before that there wasn't enough hotel capacity in Mendoza because of the Feast of Vendimia. The peloton was forced to go to La Paz to spend the night there. Once there the Italian cyclists threatened the organisers with a mass withdrawal due to the change of times of the race (it was supposed to start at 14:00 but instead started an hour later). This meant they would reach Mendoza really late. Cantina Tollo and Riso Scotti-Vinavil representatives argued with the commissaires. Finally, it was decided that two of the three final laps around La Paz would be abandoned. When the competition seemed to be getting back to normal, there was another incident. The Sport Director for the city of La Paz, Gustavo Pintos blocked the path of the peloton with his car and started accusing the race organizer, Angel Dilucca of defrauding him, since the three programmed laps around the city were not done. Then Argentinians Barboza and Flecha attempted to break away but were threatened and insulted, even a couple of fists flew from the Italians.
