ReportThe madness of the amateurBy Geoff Proctor The 1999 'cross season and the Presidio Nationals/Super Cup Finals, in particular, could be viewed as a defining moment in American cyclocross. A moment of clarity, of salience, of epiphany. Of how far the sport has come, of how far the sport can go. Sure, simultaneously, droves of rollerbladers skittered along the nearby Golden Gate Bridge and sure, fans flocked to 49er football and sure, people stayed home and waxed their boats. As it should be, I suppose. But in a lush little corner of a big green park on a San Francisco Fri-Sat-Sunday, cyclocross rocked the house. An adrenal cathedral, baby. Riders, promoters, officials, coaches, course crew, vendors, expoers, and spectators of all shapes and degrees of familiarity came together in a show of community. The 'cross congregation, baby. Even the eucalyptus ululated. And at the core of it all lay spirit of a most special kind. The spirit of the amateur. Admittedly, the professional element displayed itself in the big races. More often than not, those good enough to be paid to race, cashed in. The gutsiness of Gullickson in Saturday's national championship, the synergism of Saturn on Sunday, the Dunlap domination both days. As it should be. But for the bulk of us, the rationale for racing runs deeper than greenback. Why else would we work the clock round, train the year long, travel to and from all corners of the country, to race a bike for an hour of agony, financial loss guaranteed? Therein lies the madness of the amateur - and the honor. David Halberstam captured this spirit when he wrote his excellent book The Amateurs in 1985. While the sport (rowing) is different, the ideals are the same. Here are a few excerpts: On dedication: "...the temptations of a normal life were strong, and it became harder every year to lead a life of such immense daily denial...No sane person with an alternative to a better and easier life...was up exercising at that hour." (22) On pain: "In every race [there was] a level of pain associated with few other sports....In rowing, there was the absolute guarantee of [pain]...The race itself was a terrible ordeal. The pain bordered...on a kind of torture. The worst part of the torture was that it was self-imposed. There was no need to go through with it. But he [Tiff Wood] had willed himself to deal with it; he wanted to measure himself against the best, and the only way to do that was to bear the pain." (60-62) On pleasure: "The speed was the pleasure for Wood. In an age of jet propulsion, the single scull might move only thirteen or fourteen miles an hour and weigh just under thirty pounds, but nonetheless it felt fast. Larger boats demanded shared strength; here he was all on his own. On the days when he rowed well, the pleasure was almost unimaginable." (23) On madness: "He [Tiff Wood] exercised as many as 600 hours a year and practiced, hands on oars as many as 475 hours a year. Yet in a given year he might race only a few times, for perhaps a total of 130 minutes. Few sports had as great a disparity between time committed in practice and time actually spent in game or race conditions." (24) On honor: "I [Tiff Wood] think that what I like about rowing is the chance to be a hero. Every day in what seems like a very ordinary setting there are heroes in every boat, people reaching down to come up with that much more energy to make it work. I like that, I honor it and I think that is special in this world." (62) I, too, think it is special and the incidence of it this past weekend was frequent. A working mother (friend Marla Emde) grabbing bronze in the masters 40+ women's race; a very young cub on a very small bike getting lapped by the Matt Kelly Rainbow Express and gritting his teeth to get on Kelly's wheel in the junior race; a retiring Kevin Merrigan (Otis Guy) stomping out a win in the master's 30-39 race; a certain Dale Knapp, our country's best elite rider at last year's worlds talking of helping out the US world's effort this year even if he doesn't make the team; a trans-world Tim Johnson (CCB) flying from Belgium to California to rage. Maybe it was a good thing that the UCI did away with the category labeled "amateur". By realigning to junior, espoir, and elite, amateurism elevates to a philosophical level. A level of ideals. As it should be. In the process, the amateur spirit becomes open and accessible to all, whether you're paid to play or get paid so you can play. I'm quite sure if you asked most any pro rider racing the Presidio this weekend--a Sheri Kain, a Bart Bowen, a Ruthie Mathis, a Frank McCormack, a Travis Brown--why they were there, they'd say the money was moot. No, there was too much at stake. Things like honor, glory, grit. The real stuff. As Halberstam writes, "Perhaps in our society the true madness in the search of excellence is left for the amateur."
