Yass - Wee Jasper MTB Tour

Australia, December 3-5, 1999

Courtesy of Ian & Helen Cathles

The Inaugural Yass - Wee Jasper Mountain Tour concluded today with a final Mountain Bike Cross Country endurance stage.

Today's stage was by far the most testing and strenuous of all the stages held so-far. It was held in very hot conditions and on a very technical course, which saw most of the riders choosing to run some sections of the course rather than riding and risking getting a puncture.

The Elite Women began their race with a 3 minute difference between Hanneke Geysen in first place (after three stages) and Dellys Franke, in second place. After 4 laps (20km) Geysen had opened up a one and a half minute gap over Franke which cemented her lead in the event. Geysen went on to win the overall event with a time of 3:22:35, with Franke in second place 4:30 behind, and local rider Kelly Robinson in a distant third place at 15 minutes.

The Elite Men's field started their seven laps in searing heat but nevertheless returned lap times among the fastest of the day. Only one minute separated Paul Rowney in first place (after three stages) and Rob Woods in second place. Craig Gordon (lying only 29 seconds behind Woods after 3 stages) and Rowney, both AIS scholarship holders and members of the AOP athlete program, rode wheel to wheel for the first six laps. Only in the seventh lap did Rowney make his break and take the lead when nearing the finish to win the stage by just 1 second. Woods, suffering from the rigours of the previous day's racing could only manage third place in the Cross Country stage, although that was enough for him to also take out third place in the general classification.

Overall, the concept of stage racing for Mountain Bikes was very well recieved by the competitors and plans are already underway for the second event late in 2000.

In the lead up to next week's Oceania Championship Mountain Bike event on the Olympic course at Fairfield, both Geysen and Franke and Rowney and Gordon must be considered event favorites. This event, the final Olympic qualifying event for Mountain Bikes, will quite possibly award Australia with another berth in the Olympic Mountain Bike event for the Elite Men. Australia has already qualified two Female riders for the Olympics.

Melbourne Cup On Wheels

Courtesy of Mark Chadwick

Victorian Scott Moro won the prestigious Melbourne Cup on Wheels on Sunday 5 December 1999 despite running onto the duckboards in the last lap. Chief Commissaire Norm Lanskie deemed the action had not improved Moro"s position as the 24 year old "just extended himself so hard that he went off the track".

Moro said that during the last lap "a few guys came over me and there was just enough room for me to get underneath them at the finish". The winning time was two minutes 13.2 seconds.

Moro won his heat to make the final from a handicap mark of 190M, second was 16 year old Warrigal V.I.S. rider David Salton (110M) and Adam Carter (105M) was third.

Backmarker Tasmanian Darren Young (20M) sat up as it became apparent that the advantage given the outmarkers was too great in the six lap 2000M race. The favorite veteran Stephen Pate off scratch failed to make the final and was later disqualified in the keirin final for rough riding in the final 200M. "I"m happy with the way the form is. I won the keirin and they took it off me. That"s the way it goes."

Carnegie Caulfield Cup on Wheels

As the opening event for the recently re-surfaced Carnegie Velodrome, the Caulfield Cup on Wheels was held on the eve of Northcote's Melbourne Cup on Wheels and treated the assembled spectators to a fine days racing.

To formally open the 363.9 m track, once the obligatory ribbon was cut, the Mayor of The City of Glen Eira, His Worship Norman Kennedy, was treated to the joy of a two lap dash behind tandem pilot Russell Wolfe. The pair achieved a time of 13.60 for the final 200 metres, which left the back-seater breathless and praising Russell's capacity to keep the bike upright.

A program of scratch racing and points scores was undertaken by the 53 competitors across four senior and one junior grades. The 40 lap A grade point score was a most entertaining affair, as the 16 "Aces" rode each other ragged. U19 rider Michael Gill was using the day as a test of his recently cracked collarbone. Heavily strapped, Gill found sprinting not to his liking and took off on a lone effort. Riding solo for over ten laps the lad mopped up enough points to finish third in the event which was won by former V.I.S. rider Dylan Boone who is staging something of a comeback after some 18 months. A training accident involving two cars caused Boone significant muscle damage, although he appears to have met the challenge. Also on the comeback trail after a year off, second placed Shaun Collins (a former visiting athlete at the A.I.S.).

The 2000M Caulfield Cup on Wheels field was decided after the running of three heats in which the outmarkers (out to 240M) were unable to overcome the strength and experience behind them. The final field was as below:

Shaun Collins Scratch
Warren Knevitt 10 m
Michael Gill 30
Dylan Boone 30
Johnty Godlin 40
Steve Martin 50
Chris Salisbury 60
Dean Smith 60
Doug Garley 70
Matthew Chessum 80
Dean Johnstone 80
Mark Mathieson 90
Paul Lake 100
Justin Lobascher 140
David Hendry 160
In a fast final the placings went to the strong men of the field, Shaun Collins flew out of the pack in the bell lap and was never threatened. Taking second money was Dylan Boone, then came the gutsy Michael Gill from 50+ sprint star Chris "Snake" Salisbury and Steve Martin.

Carnegie-Caulfield CC Criterium

Victoria, Australia, December 5, 1999

Splendid, cool conditions greeted the 164 starters on a sunny Sunday in Melbourne. Of note was the number of V.I.S. and visiting institute riders who joined the beach ride after the racing. Dave Sanders' V.I.S. training camp begins Monday 6/12 with a six + our ride to Glenmaggie! Many seemed eager to refresh before the effort.

While A grade may have been lacking some of the favored trackies competing at Northcote Velodrome for the Melbourne Cup on Wheels, the field was still full of class. Attacks went and came back throughout the hour. The deciding move came in the final corner when Jerone Walters jumped hard with 200 m to go and was not bettered. Chris Carr nipped in for second in front of his friend Kristjan Snorrason with Andrew Torney fourth.

The 44 riders in B grade achieved an average of 43kph, principally through chasing a breakaway that formed around half-distance. Captained by Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingworth the break of 8 seemed secure until late in the race when a few riders managed to bridge. The resulting disruption to pace-making allowing the bunch to regain them and Mick Godfrey bolted across the line in a gutter to gutter field sprint. David Bate took second with newly wed Anna Wilson kicking hard to take third, veteran Chris Boone fourth.

C grade"s large field was kept lined out for much of the race due to the relentless determination of a few to force a sprint finish. Each attempt at escape was crushed immediately, no favors given to any that tried. Despite the speed the bulk of the bunch rounded the last corner together and fought out the sprint in fine style. Glen Harvey was able to better David DeAngelos and serial placegetter "fast" Eddie Perez, rising junior Geordon Murray was fourth and glad of it.

While D grade's pace was slower, with the young, old and newer riders making up a large percentage of the field, racing was what they were about. Surges, rather than attacks, sent a few off the back, the remaining riders taking care to make position as best they could. A few attacks managed to go away briefly in the last laps but it was all together and lined out in the end. Matthew Marques just beat Catherine Allen (winner of our recent women's race) from Scott Hawke and David Meffert.
