Twickenham CC Winter Series # 2

Driving to the race on Saturday morning, it was hard to imagine it was winter here in the UK. No heater needed in the car and short sleeves the order of the day. Okay, it was cold at 12 degrees C but with a light wind and the sun shining, race two in the winter series was at least going to be a good day for the spectators and those that liked sitting on the wheels.

As always, the better weather brought out a few more riders, among them, Amore-e-Vita pro, Jason Streather, travelling all the way from the other side of the country with brother Jamie. We also had Elite Tour de Feminin rider, Gail Longenecker. With a quality field made up of many Elites, the race started briskly, the action being started by Team Sport and Publicity’s Richard Barrowclough.

The conditions however were ideal for sitting on, which and breaks like Richard's did not get very far. With Twickenham’s Doug Crow and Bill Butterworth watching the moves closely, Pete Sweetenham (Twickenham CC), Jason Streather and Mick Hill (Viking Wheelers) did manage to build up a 30 second lead and hold it despite the bunch travelling along at an average of 44-45kph. Among those driving at the front was Gail Longenecker, showing that even at these speeds, female riders could more than hold their own with the male riders, a message for other women looking for some high speed racing.

Unlike last week, this time the wind was blowing in the riders faces down the long back straight, which meant a tailwind up the hill. Even some of the strongest riders in the race had trouble breaking the elastic, keeping the group together going up the hill.

Towards the end though, classy Triathlete, Stuart Hayes (Sigma Sport) went off the front and soon a group of four formed when Doug Crow (Twickenham CC) who has sensational form at the moment, and his teammate, Bill Butterworth along with sprinter Stuart Jackson joined Hayes. The four worked well together with Hayes, Crow and Butterworth providing most of the driving power.

At the end though, Stuart Jackson (Heffs Cycles) had too much in his legs for the others as he sprinted to victory underneath the two Twickenham CC riders' noses to record his first win in this series. Less than a minute down, came Vince Freeman, who had attacked on the last lap and just managed to hold off the sprinters by a few seconds.

The group gallop was won by elite Vince Halpern who has lost none of his edge despite a break recently, holding off an inform Jamie Streather (Cardiff CC), Paul Doherty and Amore-e-Vita pro, Jason Streather. The large group of 20 or more riders showed just how much the weather plays a part in these races. Because despite the race being more than 3kph faster than last week (over 43 kph), the main group was rarely split and when it did, it didn’t take long for a regrouping to take place.

The highlight for the promoting club (Twickenham CC) was the placing by Doug Crow who managed to achieve his Elite Licence on the last race of the season. Nothing like cutting it fine! Not only had Doug managed to score 100 points to get his 1st category licence, he then went on to to get another 200 points to get his Elite licence, all in one season.
