A good field of 144 riders assembled at AFL Park on the first Tuesday evening of the season where the temperature exceeded 30 C. The light north wind died to nothing during the A and B grade races - perfect conditions for racing. We were privileged to host Angelika Rauw from the German magazine "Tour" and Dirk, her photographer. Angelika held enough interviews to fill many articles she said. With Anna Wilson, who beat German Hanka Kumpfernagel into second place in the World Cup, Karen Barrow and Liz Tadich to start with the German press could well be full of Aussie news for their winter. It seemed as though every clubman who has been in Europe for the last few years was on hand.

Before the races got underway a minutes silence was observed to remember our clubmate Sid Patterson. Four times World Champion and winner of 15 six-day races Patterson died 29 November 1999 from liver cancer.

In form VIS rider David Salton took on the best that A grade could muster, beating James Taylor in a rollicking sprint. Chris Carr took third with Robert Tighello fourth. The mid-sized field let single riders drift away repeatedly, only to drop the hammer any time a group got together. The bunch sprint was fiercely contested.

A breakaway that looked secure for the better part of C grade's race was caught in the last corner with 250 metres to go. Despite being caught, the three breakaways took the first three places with excellent display of thoughtful teamwork. Darren Cathie showed his fellow policeman Ron Gallagher how well he could take advantage of a leadout, while fellow escapee Leo DiMartino managed third from Glen Harvey who had led the struggling bunch up to the break.

D grade saw Ken Ford away again with his son Michael for company again! Fellow breakaway rider Peter Riseley managed to crack the son, who tempoed into third place, while Riseley accounted for dad. Steve Twining managed fourth by winning the bunch sprint.
