Results and Reports for December 27Latrobe Track Carnival Day 2 Australia, December 27, 1999 Courtesy of Matthew Conn Former Launceston "Belgian" Matthew Gilmore won today's $12000 Latrobe Wheelrace. A pre-race favourite, and one of 7 scratchmen to line up in the final, Gilmore won a thrilling race catching the frontmarkers with 300m to go, and outsprinting carnival veteran Stephen Pate of Victoria. An emotional Gilmore dedicated the win to his grandfather Jack, who had died earlier in the year while the Spa-RDM professional was racing overseas. Gilmore said he was relieved that the race was over, and that he had lived up to his own high expectations, and would now be able to relax and enjoy the rest of the racing series. The early stages of the final were marred by a bad fall at the back of the scratch bunch, when Scott Callow fell heavily and fellow Tasmanian rider Daniel Cutting had nowhere to go but over the top. Callow was shaken badly by the fall and lost a lot of skin, however Cutting fared worse breaking his wrist. He had only just begun racing again after breaking his other wrist earlier in the road season. The final laps of the race were run in light drizzle, and were reminiscent of the wet scenes when Gilmore's younger brother Luc won the Burnie wheel two years ago (following then in the wheels of his father and older brother who had both previously won the New years day event) The racing moves inside to Launceston's Silverdome tomorrow night, followed by two days back at the coast for the Devonport Carnival. It seems the scratchmen will be hard to beat throughout the carnival series, however some spirited riding from the middle and front markers will ensure that they have to work for every dollar they get.
