Twickenham Criteriums # 4

Hillingdon, England, December 11 1999

Winter arrived with a vengeance at Hillingdon with gale force winds and rain, making race four one for the strong riders again. From the drop of the flag, the action began with Alan Leach (Team Sport & Publicity) launching a series of moves on the first lap, closely watched by series leader, Bill Butterworth (Twickenham CC). The action was thick and fast, and the field split to pieces in the first 10 minutes. As one of the riders in a small group around a minute behind along with Amore-e-Vita pro, Jason Streather, I can say for sure it was one of the hardest events so far.

The wind was howling across the circuit which meant that the extent of the tailwind was no more than around 100 metres with the long back straight and climb made more difficult by the cross wind. After only 5km, a group of six riders broke clear, with Butterworth very prominent despite being marked very solidly.

In the leading group along with Butterworth were two riders from Heffs Cycles, Stuart Jackson and Paul Doherty, along with Peter Swettenham (Twickenham CC), Mick Hill (Viking Wheelers) and Peter Noble (Team Sport & Publicity). The pressure from the Twickenham riders soon told on a few riders legs as Mick Hill and Stuart Jackson slid back to a strong chasing group.

It was the sheer pace of the attacks that split the field because, despite the fragmenting of the bunches going on, riders down to 14th remained on the same lap as the leaders -a small consolation for those down in the lower places whose legs were screaming in an effort to get back on. There were also a number of riders whose tactics left a lot to be desired, one minute letting riders go and then the next, ripping the resulting group of chasers to pieces.

At the front of the race meanwhile, the leaders worked well together although even that came to nothing as the chasers, including last weeks winner Doug Crow (Twickenham CC) made contact. Others who made it back up were the in form Dave Griffiths (Twickenham CC), Jamie Streather (CC Cardiff), Mick Hill and Alan Leach. Marooned behind were Mick McManus (Twickenham CC along with Larry Hickmott (Team Synergy), Jason Streather (Amore-e-Vita) and Niel Hornet (API Resprays).

With the finish looming, it looked like a being a close finish but the others didn't reckon on the tremendous strength of Bill Butterworth, who's forceful riding took him and Peter Noble clear with Doug Crow showing what great form he has by joining them. At the finish though, a surge by Bill Butterworth helped him go clear by a few seconds on Doug Crow with Peter Noble putting in yet another notable ride. The win by Butterworth helped him increase his lead in the series.
