1998 Results     Report: Italian Francesco Casagrande (Vini Caldirola) repeated his 1998 triumph to win the Matteotti Trophy which was contested in the streets of Pescara over 13 laps. He attacked the peloton on the 11th lap in the hills of Montesilvano. There were 6 other riders who went with him. They quickly built a lead of around 1.37. On the last climb up Montesilvano, Casagrande launched his decisive attack. He was joined briefly by Under-23 World Champion Ivan Basso but with 8 kms to go he also capitaluated to the relentlessness of Casagrande. Before the start, the peloton and officials observed a minute's silence in memory of Italian rider Amilcare Tronca, who died on August 28 after he was struck by a truck while training near to his house in Italy.
