9th Trofeo Luis Ocaña, Cat 1.4

Report: ONCE’s Jose Luís Rebollo won the 9th edition of the Trofeo Luís Ocaña, which was raced in the Cuenca province of Spain. He won in a tight final sprint from Oscar Freire (Vitalicio Seguros). Close by were three other riders led in by Banesto’s Aitor Garmendia at 0.02. The race also paid homage to the family of deceased cyclist Manuel Sanroma, who died at la Volta a Cataluña and whose brother Geronimo participated in the amateur race riding for team Alcosto. The race was very tough due to the selective parcours and the peloton found it difficult making any effective attacking moves in the the first section at Motilla del Palancar. The action began as the race moved into the capital of Cuenca, where Vitalicio’s Santi Blanco, passed over the Cat 2 climb of Valdecabras alone. The definitive move came on the descent though where Rebollo, Friere and Garmendia attacked and opened a 1 minute gap. There was still 20 kms to go though and by the time the riders approached the last km the gap was still 50 seconds. However the last km involved a very steep climb and although Rebollo dominated the finish the gaps came down quickly with the top 10 all finishing within 39 seconds. Cuenca, 152 kms: 1.
