Preview:

The race began as the Ronde van Gendringen in 1937 and was raced over what became a legendary racing circuit called the Hoge Rokken. The first race was in two sections: Professionals won by Janus Hellemons and the amateurs won by Gerrit Schulte. Schulte went on to ride the Tour de France as a professional. He also had a successful career as a track rider beating Fausto Coppi in 1948 in the pursuit. Later he raced as a 6-day rider with teammates like Ge Peters, Gerrit Boeijen, Klaus Bugdahl and of-course Peter Post and Jan Plantaz.

The race continued after the war and became the Dwars Door Gendringen in 1995 after a change in organisation. The change in name also marked the first foreign win when Sweden's Daniël Sjöberg was successful. The parcours was changed and now involves a 14.1 kms circuit between Gendringen and Anholt to the south. The 1999 edition will see the riders race 14 laps of the parcours for a total of 197.4 kms. The race begins at 13.00 and is expected to finish around 17.30.

Report:

Before the start, the announcer well-known Dutch cycling entity Hans van Bon (father of Leon) said: "The Dwars door Gendringen is a beautiful race because people can follow it along the parcours. It is for the people. The future is positive because it is well organised and is able to get increasingly strong fields. That is good for Gendringen and Anholt, and cycling in general."

Zoon Leon (Rabobank) predicted a mass sprint: "We are expecting a mass sprint. We will try to get our sprinter Robbie McEwen into position for that."

TVM's Jeroen Blijlevens, always to the points was not enthusiastic about the showdown with Rabobank: "Och, a duel with McEwen is nothing special for me at all."

And so the race started at 13.12 with former professional Hennie Kuiper firing the starting Bjornar Vestal (Acceptcard) and Belgian Marc Streel (Jack & Jones). They built a 3 minute lead on a small group of 4 - Rik Reinerink (Batavus), Otto Rafael (EC Bayer), Laurens ten Dam (Alcmaria Victrix) and Jan Schilder (Alcmaria Victrix).

By the half-way mark the leading 2 were 3 minutes up, with the chasing 4 a further 2 minutes in front of Dutch duo Michel Cerneus (Batavus) and Frank Wagemaker (Tegeltoko). The peloton with all the major names - Van Bon, Knaven, Zinetti and Blijlevens - were at 7.00. Soon after the leading 2 waited for the 4 chasers and they formed a very strong leading group.

The 6 rode together well and with 3 laps to go they had a lead of 1.50 on a accelerating peloton. A mass sprint was looming as Rabobank and TVM-Farm Frites were setting up their sprinters. The leaders were caught on the second last lap and in the final sprint it was a tussle between Jeroen Blijlevens and top amateur rider Rudi Kemna. They were together across the line with the professional gaining the narrow decision. Collstrop rider Frank Schinck (Bel) was third.

Jeroen Blijlevens (TVM) achieved his 15th win for the season. He said that it was not clear that he would get up: "I went very early in the sprint but felt good. I was enough. I did not know if I had won.

Kemna was very happy with his result: "I was very pleased with the sprint. This is the first time that I have been able to sprint against the great sprinters. It was great to sprint with Jeroen. But I had no luck and I had to ride in the wind for the last 2 laps."

Third place-getter Frank Schinck also had respect for Blijlevens. "Normally I am a kermis rider in Belgian. I am very pleased to share the peloton with Jeroen."
