Stage 1, Ourense - Ourense, 108 kms:

Italian Paolo Bettini (Mapei-Quick Step) won the first stage which included the climbs of Alto de Barón (height 400 metres) and the Alto de Santa Mariña (370 m) in a very fast time of 2.27.41 (avs 43.9 km/h).

The riders left Ourense in favourable weather conditions which aided the fast speed. The Italian became the leader overall after the first stage. After a steady start the stage became marked by the constant attacks which continued up the third category Alto de Barón.

At the Cat 3 Alto de Barón (km 42.6), it was Roberto Heras first followed by Francesco Casagrande, Marcos Serrano and Igor González de Galdeano. The first hot spot sprint was three kilometers later, with Marcos Serrano taking 3 seconds, Roberto Heras, 2 seconds and Igor González taking 1.

At km 50, the first major attack went away and 25 riders opened a maximum lead of 33 seconds. At km 61, another group of 8 went away in two stages - first Orlando Rodrigues (Banesto), Castresana (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Tieteriouk (Liquigas) and Kivilev (Festina-Lotus), to be joined soon after by Fabio Roscioli (Costa Almeria-Amica Chips), Luca Mazzanti (Cantina Tollo), Leonardo Guidi (Polti), Paolo Bettini (Mapei-Quick Step).

At the next hot spot sprint (km 81.8) it was Orlando Rodrigues from Bettini and Teteriouk taking the seconds. Another group was just behind them and comprised Marcos Serrano (ONCE), Roberto Heras (Kelme-Costa Blanca), Txente García Acosta (Banesto) and Igor González de Galdeano (Vitalicio Seguros). The peloton behind had split into two groups with the two sprint favourites German Marcel Wust and Dutchman Jeroen Blijlevens in the back group. The front group built a 32 second advantage over the peloton at the 100 kms mark. Roscioli tried to escape, to no avail and was absorbed by the breakaway by km 106. The escape groups joined and Heras and Serrano were considered to be strong stage victory contenders given their good form lately. But in the sprint it was Roberto Bettini who was the quickest. Roberto Heras tried to escape with only 1 kms to go but was surprised by Bettini near the end.

Stage 2, Ourense - Monforte de Lemos, 171.5 kms:

Dutch rider Jeroen Blijlevens (TVM) won the second stage easily dominating the sprint finsh from Angel Edo. Without the presence of his major sprinting rivals like Tom Steels and Mario Cipollini Blijlevens was not threatened for speed. The real aggressor though throughout the race continued to be Italian Fabio Roscioli (Amica Chips-Costa Almeria) who once again looked for every opportunity to attack. His team Amica Chips have been very active in the first two days of the Tour with the clear aim of impressing the organisers of the Vuelta who still have two teams to select. It is now known that the Portuguese Benfica team, which rode so well in the recently completed Tour of Portugal will take the third unfilled position.

Roscioli went away alone at the 10 kms mark and built a maximum lead of 3.40. He was eventually caught at the 150 kms mark. The peloton was fighting out a separate contest behind trying to work for the unaccounted for hot spot sprint bonuses. In the first premie, Roscioli was first then Bettini then Milesi. Roscioli took the second then Serrano and Bettini (who was aiding his overall leadership aspirations). After Roscioli was caught there were numerous attempts to escape but the sprinter's teams like TVM, Mapei and Team Polti were in control. A mass sprint was then inevitable.

The only feature of the stage other than Roscioli's efforts was the abandonment within the last 20 kms of one of the main favourites for the overall GC - Italian Francesco Casagrande (Vini Caldirola).

Stage 3, Monforte de Lemos - El Ferrol, 190 kms:

Jesús Presa García, a motorcyclist working for the organisation that runs the Tour of Galicia was killed during stage 2 after he collided with a Team Polti rider Zanetti. He was taken to the Crystal Pi6nor de Ourense Hospital and died soon afterwards. His widow visited the hospital early on Wednesday morning to give her consent for organ donation. Presa, 40 years was married with two children. He suffered severe head injuries and was brain dead on arrival at the hospital.

As a result Stage 3 between Monforte de Lemos and Ferrol was cancelled after the riders met with the race organiser Enrique Franco (Unipublic). The riders still rode the distance although left off the final 20 kms across the city of Ferrol. All classifications will remain as they were at the end of Stage 2 and competition will resume again for stage 4, a 199 kms journey between Ferrol and Cangas do Morrazo.

Stage 4, El Ferrol - Cangas do Morrazo, 199 kms:

German rider Marcel Wust (Festina-Lotus) won Stage 4 over 199 kms between El Ferrol and Cangas do Morrazo by easily outsprinting Kelme fast man Angel Edo. Wust dedicated the victory to Fuenlabrada rider Manolo Sanroma, who died in June after a bad accident in the Volta a Catalunya.

The day was marked by fast team riding and the peloton finished 30 minutes in front of the predicted schedule. But the pattern was familiar. A daring break early - this time Fabio Roscioli (Costa-Almeria) was joined by Juan Carlos Vicario (Fuenlabrada). The Spaniard could not do his share of the work and at km 42 Roscioli was alone once again. Behind him the peloton was moving fast and the strong tail wind assisted the Italian in his breakaway ambitions. Eventually the teams ran him down and a mass sprint was inevitable.

Wust was gracious towards Sanroma in his victory celebration. He told the press afterwards that the win was very important for him since he had been laid-up with a broken collarbone for some months. He was unable to ride the Tour as a result. He acknowledged the faith that his team had put in him.

Leader Paolo Bettini will now come under intense pressure tomorrow from all the teams.

Stage 5, Cangas do Morrazo - Alto de Monte Aloia, 144.2 kms:

Marcos Serrano, ONCE-Deutsche Bank won the Tour of Galicia when he won the last stage from Cangas do Morrazo to Tui. He is the first Galician rider to win the Tour since Jesús Blanco Villar won in 1985.

The Tour was marked by the aggressive riding by individual attackers and teams. Once again it was Fabio Rosicioli who tried a solo attack but he was soon joined by Rafael Díaz Justo (ONCE) and Korff (Festina-Lotus), who were soon dropped by the fast moving Italian. His solo adventure lasted 90 kms. The ONCE and Kelme teams raised the pace in the chase to make the race as hard as possible. The aim? To wear away at race leader Paolo Bettini (Mapei). Bettini, helped by Tafi, defended his yellow jersey bravely in the face of all the attacks. Then the climb of Monte Aloia arrived. He was in the peloton as the 9.5 ascent began. The climb cut the pace somewhat. Abraham Olano attacked and the peloton was stretched and the counter-attacks began. Bettini clearly was in trouble at this point. As Heras and Serrano were on the front driving the pace, Bettini was dropped. Roberto Heras encountered mechanical problems and was forced to change his bike. This gave Serrano the opportunity he needed to take the victory and the overall GC win.
