Jalabert out of hospital this week

Laurent Jalabert will be able to leave the hospital in Madrid later this week. The French rider sustained a fractured skull and a broken collar bone when he fell during the Castilla-Leon last weekend. A spokesperson for the hospital announced that: "Jalabert will leave this week although no exact date is known as yet." It is still unclear whether Jalabert will be able to ride in the Vuelta in September. His team manager Manolo Sainz is as yet undecided.

However, Sainz has refused to rule out the possibility of Laurent Jalabert's participation in the Vuelta (September 4-25). Sainz is waiting to see how the world number one recovers from his fall and to see "who is most in form. We're much happier since the doctor told us that his recovery will be quick and that there won't be serious consequences. From tomorrow, we'll be thinking about his racing programme."

Bartoli quits for the season

Two-time World Cup winner Michele Bartoli announced on Tuesday that he would not return this season to contest the World Championships. He said his recovery was progressing but was slower than had been anticipated. He fell in June during the Tour of Germany and fractured his patella and tore ligaments in his right knee. Doctors had initially thought he might be able to race again in late August. Bartoli consulted with doctors this week and decided that it was now not prudent to hurry the comeback. He told a press conference yesterday that: "My knee needs time to heal. Despite my determination and very strong desire to participate in the world race championship in October, and win it, the consultations with the orthopedic specialists have made me change my mind.'' The Mapei team doctor Massimo Testa was confident about next season. He said: Michele could wear the yellow jersey and win the Tour de France next year. He has the turbo, the diesel and a good capacity for recovery."

Kurt Van de Wouwer will ride at San Sebastian

11th placed rider in the Tour de France, Kurt Van de Wouwer has avoided the need for an operation on a cyst in his bottom and has told a Belgian newspaper that he will be riding at San Sebastian. On Monday, he consulted Dr. Van Mol in Herk-de-Stad who ruled out the immediate need for surgery. The Belgian rode at the Surhuisterveen Criterium on Tuesday and is listed to ride in Maastricht tonight, then at Kortrijk on Thursday. On Friday morning he will fly to San Sebastian for the next round of the World Cup on Saturday.

World Track Championships at the Antwerp Sportpaleis in 2001

The race committee of the UCI decided on Tuesday that the 2001 World Track Championships would be held in the famous Sportpaleis in Antwerp (Belgium). They also declared that the world road championships would be held on October 3, 2002 in Belgium.

The president of the Belgian Cycling Federation (BWB) Laurent De Backer was at the meeting which decided the calendar and said he felt like a very lucky man. He told the press: "There were two candidates to host the World Track championships in 2001. A Spanish submission from San Sebastian was very strong with excellent administration proposed and strong financial figures. The difference probably was that the Spanish bid proposed holding an open-air event while in Antwerp the Sportpaleis is indoor. That is important for reaching an agreement with TV sponsors. It means that the event cannot be interrupted by the weather. Because there was no risk of rain ruining the event in Antwerp we were declared the superior host."

The organisation of the event in 2001 will combine the forces of the BWB, representatives from the Antwerp Province (Government) and the management of the Sportpaleis.

Australia, Victorian Club Team's Championships

Adam Murchie from VicCycle (the Victorian Federation) reports that the on a cold and overcast day, the Victorian Club Teams Champs proved to be a successful event. Teams of 4 started out over a 30km out and back course, with dead roads and rolling hills meaning that the strongest team would win. The one major climb, approximately 20km from the start on the out and back course proved to be one of the areas in which the titles were won and lost. With a light cross winds, speeds were reasonably high, with one hill descent having teams reaching speeds of approximately 80 km/h. With a total of 39 teams entered, the Champs were well contested in the lead up to the Victorian Road Championships on August 14-15.

In the Elite Men's event, Carnegie A lived up to expectations by winning the event, with Carnegie B and Footscray coming in close behind. In the Women's, Carnegie again proved too strong for the opposition while in the veterans, Host Club Ballarat Sebastopol accounted for Footscray and Brentwood Cobram.
