Virenque sacks lawyer

Richard Virenque has terminated his collaboration with Gilbert Collard from Marseilles, who has defended him since the Festina scandal erupted. He has now engaged a new lawyer from Paris, Eric Hemmerdinger. He was cited on March 30 for "complicity to supply and use banned substances."

The charges are not expected to be heard until the spring of 2000. The court in Lille which is hearing the charges will list them for the first time in December 1999.

Jalabert injured in serious fall

French rider Laurent Jalabert (ONCE-Deutsche Bank) was involved in a serious fall during Stage 1 of the Vuelta a Castilla Leon on Sunday. He has been diagnosed with fractures to bones in the head (just behind the ear), a broken ear drum, and a fractured right shoulder. The injuries have been diagnosed as being serious.

It is now considered unlikely that Jalabert will start in the the Vuelta a España, which starts on September 4.

It is unclear how the accident occurred. The riders were on a straight section of road and riding at about 40 km/h through the feedzone. Jalabert had already picked up his food bag. He was the only rider involved. Nicolás Terrados and Sebastián Pozo, doctor and masseur for ONCE respectively, was with him in the ambulance journey to the hospital. At 21.00 Terrados made the decision to transfer him by ambulance to the Ramón y Cajal Clinic in Madrid. He arrived there at 23.30 conscious and smiled to the awaiting press.
