Report:

151 women riders started in round 4 - La Fleche Wallonne - from Huy at 12.16. The weather was terrible with wet snow and cold conditions. After only 1.5 kms two riders - Karin Avenant and Chantal Polansky drop out. The peloton broke up badly early on and on the first major climb of the race - the Côte de France (km 13) - more than 50 riders are in a second peloton at 1.30. They are for all intents and purposes gone. The snow was falling throughout and the first major move came at km 24.5 when 6 top riders attacked. Two kms later they were absorbed back into the first peloton.

At km 28, there was a major fall in the first peloton with the World Champion from Lithuania Diana Ziliute being both injured and delayed by mechanical problems. She never regained contact with the main peloton. But other riders - Lotte Schmitt, Lisbeth Simper and Monica Valen were seriously injured and taken to the nearby hospital in Luik.

On the next major climb - the Côte d'Ereffe - there was an attempt by a lone Russian rider but it was quickly negated and 75 rider were still in the main peloton. At km 59, Russian Valentina Gerasimova attacked alone and by the top of the Côte de Bohissau she was 0.35 in front. She stayed away until km 83 and at that point there were still around 60 riders in the lead peloton.

It was clear that the Acca Due team from Italy had planned a major assault on the last climb of the Muur de Huy. At km 85, American Mari Holden attacked without success. Then at km 88, her teammate Gabriela Pregnolato attacks and gains a lead of 100 metres at the base of the climb. She was soon caught however and only a small group was left on the climb. German Hanka Kupfernagel attacked towards the top and kept the 50 metre gap until the finish. Her victory gave her the lead in the overall World Cup after 4 races.
