Stage 5a, Lekumberri - Orrio, 118 kms:
Dutch National Champion Michael Boogerd (Rabobank), won the first sector of
stage 5 which was raced between Lecumberri and Orio over 118 kms. The animator
of the race was the Spaniard José Luis Rubiera (Kelme Costa Blanca) who took off
at km 12 and created a maximum gap of 3 minutes. The peloton brought him back with
only 6 kms to go - a grand solo flight of 112 kms. The big loser of the race was
Spaniard Bingen Fernández who started third overall and suffered a mechanical
problem outside of Orio which caused him to lose more than one minute and any
hopes for the final podium. Boogerd finished off his team's excellent work. Rabobank
were the principal driving forces when the chase of Rubiera became serious. He attacked
near to the finish on the last climb hoping to surprise Jalabert but was only able
to gain three seconds.
