Stage 1, Tolosa - Tolosa, 115 kms:

The French cyclist Laurent Jalabert, from the Spanish ONCE-Deutsche Bank team became the first overall leader of the 39th Vuelta al Pais Vasco when he won the first stage over 115 kms which started and finished in the Guipuzcoan town of Tolosa. The French champion beat Italian Davide Rebellin (Team Polti) in the sprint with in-form Dutch rider Michael Boogard third at 21 seconds.

The stage was set alight by the very attacking riding of the Spanish teams and 5 of the 6 local teams were able to get riders in the escape (of 5 riders) that took place in the first 5 kms and lasted until the 75 kms mark. At one stage the 5 riders had a 3 minute time gap on the chasing peloton.

At km 75, the flight was over and then the Spaniards Mikel Pradera (Euskaltel), Pedro Horrillo (Vitalicio), Unai Osa (Banesto) and Matias Cagigas (Fuenlabrada) together with Italian Andrea Peron (ONCE) tried to replicate the first escape. But first Italian Marco Pantani, and then German Jan Ullrich, then Laurent Jalabert and finally Spaniard Abraham Olano, who would have loved to win this stage, made moves.

The rider to benefit from the attacks was Italian Michele Coppolillo, who took the opportunity in a fragmented peloton to attack on the ascent of the alto de Alkiza which was at the 25 kms to go mark. But he was also brought back on the final climb of the day the alto Leaburu, a Cat 3 climb 6 kms form the end.

On the alto Leaburu, Italian Davide Rebellin surprised Pantani and company when he attacked and only Laurent Jalabert was able to get his wheel. In the final section Rebellin and Jalabert worked beautifully together and nullified the work of the teams who wanted to get their sprinters into place.

Laurent Jalabert showed his sprinting talent by leaving Davide Rebellin with 20 metres to go. Then Boogerd came in with Spaniard Bingen Fernandez and Swiss Niki Aebersold at 21 seconds.
