97th Paris-Roubaix, World Cup Round 3

France, April 11, 1999

Italian Franco Ballerini (Lampre-Daikin) has two things going for him today when he starts in Compiegne. He has won this race twice before (1995 and 1998) and he is no longer riding for Mapei-Quick Step, where he has to contend with the winning aspirations of Belgian Johan Museeuw and to a lesser extent Andrea Tafi.

He is aiming to become only the 7th rider to win the "Hell of the North" 3 times. So in one sense he is free from the Mapei squad to win it himself and in another sense he no longer has the power that being a leading member of that team brought to him.

Readers will remember him as being part of the famous 1-2-3 Mapei result in 1997 when manager Patrick Lefevere "fixed" the finale and gave the race to Johan Museeuw and degraded the classic in the process.

Museeuw has now said he will race after expressing fear of the route after crashing badly in the Arenberg forest last year. The race organisers have reversed the direction that the race comes through the cobbled forest to avoid the fast downhill section which caused crashes regularly. He trained on the cobbles this week with teammates.

The weather is not looking good and Museeuw could avoid all risks and help Andrea Tafi (3rd in 1997 in the fix, and 2nd last year).

The other former Mapei rider who now has said he has designs on the race is Franck Vandenbroucke who went to his manager earlier this week and requested that he be allowed to race. Initially, he was going to race the Waalse Pijl on Wednesday and LBL on Sunday week. Bernard Quilfen, Cofidis team manager has given him his wish. He is still smarting from his defeat last Sunday in the Ronde van Vlaanderen and aims to go well today

Milan-San Remo winner, Belgian Andrei Tchmil (who won here in 1994) is another rider on a mission. He knows how to ride the cobbles and how to win in the Velodrome at Roubaix. He lives in the region and trains around the roads regularly.

The other riders who may threaten include the ever-present Dane Rolf Sorensen and perhaps Emmanuel Magnien.
