Report

The GP Miguel Indurain was previously called the Trofeo Comunidad Foral de Navarra which has 30 previous editions in its history. The race is held in Estella over a mountainous 198.2 kms which includes 4 mountain climbs.

The Italian rider Stefano Garzelli (Mercatone Uno) won the first Gran Premio Miguel Indurain in a sprint finish from 4 other riders which started and finished in Estella. Garzello, who was second last year (beaten in the sprint) was the driving force in this race and held off David Etxebarría (ONCE), and Davide Rebellin (Polti). Laurent Jalabert (ONCE) and Marco Velo (Mercatone) came in a close 4th and 5th respectively.

The race was characterized by a very slow beginning with the riders sitting with their teammates and riding very easily and then a second section of very fast racing. The first selection came on the climb of the Cat 1 "alto de Etxauri". The climb over the pass located 76 kms from the finish saw the peloton split into two groups. In the front bunch, riders from ONCE, Euskaltel, Mercatone and Polti were present, while Banesto had no representation and was forced to work in the chasing bunch to try to bring down the time gap which was around 1 minute going over the top.

The next decisive selection came on the climb of Cat 2 Puerto de Lezaún, only 17 kms before the finish. 4 riders - Garzelli, Etxebarría, Rebellin and Jalabert went away and were joined in the last kms by Marco Velo. The great local rider and former Tour de France winner Miguel Indurain was doing officials duties like cutting the tap to send the riders on their way and also presenting the trophy to Garzelli. The race was organised by the Club Ciclista Estella.
