Background:Ernst Bretscher writes about the history of the race. The correct name of the Berner-Rundfahrt (Tour of Berne) is Nordwest-Schweizer-Rundfahrt (in German) or Tour of Nord-West-Switzerland (English). This race is organised under this name. The second name was added in 1990, when the new organiser started to organise the race in the City of Berne. Before, the Tour of Nordwest-Switzerland was every year organised in a different city, before Berne in Kirchberg, Biel, Olten, Oberwil, Thun, Berikon, Langendorf, Basel, etc. etc. The first race was in 1921.The race was organised this year with 940 competitors in 10 separate races. In Switzerland it is the 3rd biggest one-day race (after World-Cup Zurich an Gippingen) and the only race on one day for all categories. Bern, 196.8 kms:The race was dominated by the two leading Swiss riders Niki Aebersold (the current Swiss National Champion) and the ruling World Champion Oscar Camenzind. Ultimately it came down to a sprint between 4 riders and Italian Andrea Ferrigato took his second win of the season, when he easily beat the Swiss pair and Belgian Marc Wauters.
