If Kathy Watt had have been in this race and she had have ridden the last section of it like Nathalie Bates did then there would have been an outpouring of scorn from the Australian cycling bureaucracy. Quite simply - the tactics of the two Australians in the final kms of the race were deplorable and belied any notion that these women are being coached in how to ride a bike.

The relative youth of Bates cannot be used as an excuse. If they are not old enough to know that you don't chase down your teammate in the closing moments of the race then they should not be given Australian jerseys. How was it possible you might ask. 5 riders alone at the front of the field in the closing laps. A Russian Olga Zabelinkaia, a Fin, a German Tina Liebig and 2 Australians - Nathalie Bates and Sara Carrigan.

The 5 became 3 in the last kms of the race with the German and Bates behind and looking like they would not figure in the outcome. And what does Bates do? She works like a dog with the German on her wheel and tows her back to the front group with her teammate looking strong. That was bad enough.

Then in the last km, two women break away including Carrigan. This looked to be a decisive break. What does Bates do? She tows the other riders back to the top group. Tina Liebeg couldn't believe her luck. How could she win with 2 Australian riders in a group of 5. Well easy really. Just get one Australian to work against the other. The question is why? What are these women told by the coaches?

The Australian press has already avoided reporting the scandal. Just that 18-year old Sara Carrigan won bronze just ahead of her teammate Nathalie Bates. It makes a mockery of the word team. Liebeg who was gone without the help of Bates went on to win.
