Stage ReportThe intrepid Marcel Wust, our pain and suffering columnist, is now the undisputed fastest man in the Vuelta. He can't climb to save himself but now he is thinking big. A third stage win. Third? That is because he won his second stage the Tour of Spain, is seeking another treble of stage wins. He is now targetting the final stage in Madrid.I guess the issue is why did he slow down so much this time! He won at Léon after a 188 kms ride from Burgos at an average of just over 38 km/h compared to the record average speed for a stage of 51.137 kph at Zaragoza last Sunday. However, we will forgive him. There were strong winds for most of Stage 17. He told the press afterwards: "There is pressure on me now. The Spanish have a saying 'there is never two without a third', so my greatest wish is to win in Madrid as I did three years ago." If he can do it he will repeat his 1995 and 1997 performance of three wins for the Vuelta. The action for the stage, despite the headwinds, came from Matias Cagigas who mounted a solo attacked which came unstuck just 12 kms before the finish. He had been away for around 87 kms. Of the main contenders - Olano, Escartin, Jalabert and Jimenez - there was a cessation in the hostilities of the previous day. The attacks will come again but the question is from whom! The undercurrent talk of the Vuelta now is that Olano and Jimenez, both from Banesto, are not getting on and Jimenez resents riding for Olano at the expense of his own GC aspirations. Olano rejected the rumours. He told the press: "It is those outside our team who make problems. There is nothing wrong between us. All the team know they have to work for me."
