Stage 9 Brief:A fairly flat stage today with 3 challenges: At 52.5 kms, the Cat 4 Côte de Saint Léonard (a 2.6 km climb at 3.3%); at 82.5 kms, the Cat 4 Côte de Loubère (a 1.2 km climb at 5.3%); and at the 160.5 kms mark, the Cat 4 Côte de Lahitte-Toupière (a 2.1 km climb at 5.2%).Rabobank's Leon Van Bon won the last stage before the mountains raced under oppressive conditions. He had been part of a 4 man breakaway with Jens Voigt (GAN), Massimiliano Lelli (Cofidis) and Christophe Agnolutto (Casino) and won his second Tour stage of his career. The main bunch nearly ran them down, only failing by 12 seconds, with Erik Zabel winning the bunch sprint and retaining his green jersey. They had stayed away for over 169 kms and at one stage had a maximum lead of 4 minutes. With the peloton rapidly approaching, Voigt went for the sprint first with Van Bon on his wheel. He just came over Voigt at the line. Laurent Desbiens retained the yellow by 14 seconds on Andrea Tafi. Van Bon who has never completed a Tour in 4 tries told the press that This is the best result ever in my career, better than my bronze medal at the world championships." The blazing sun opened up a new controversy for Tour organisers. At one stage the temperature approached 44 degrees and drink restrictions were abandoned by the organisation. Riders were thus able to get new bidons whenever they needed them. The first casuality of the heat was Super Mario who did his normal trick of abandoning as the race approached the mountains. With 20 kms left to ride in this stage, he stopped and said the heat had given him an upset stomach. With the heat wave certain to continue and the race going upwards tomorrow, the race organisation told the press that the time gaps will blow out and many riders will abandon. The talk is less of Festina and more about heat and climbing now. Tomorrow they have to ride over 5 classic mountains - Aubisque, Tourmalet, Soulor, Aspin and Peyresourde. And as if we had forgotten him, the talk is focusing on Marco Pantani who has been sitting quietly in the peloton waiting for the next two days. With the expulsion of Richard Virenque, Pantani is the only real climber left in the Tour. Luc Leblanc, no mean climber himself, even said to the press that he thought Pantani could win the Tour. Telekom are certain to attack him early to break his resolve. However, he lost a lot of time in the first ITT and sits in 47th place, notably, 5.04 behind Ullrich.
