Stage 8 Brief:The riders start climbing today. Several obstacles confront them. At 12.5 kms, the Cat 3 Côte de Chavagnac (a 6.7 km climb at 3.4%); at 66.5 kms, the Cat 4 Côte de Saint-Martial-de-Nabirat (a 3.2 km climb at 2.3%); at 125.5 kms, the Cat 4 Côte de Bourlens (a 1.9 km climb at 4.7%); at 135 kms, the Cat 4 Côte de Maurets (a 3.5 km climb at 3.7%); at 140 kms, the Cat 4 Côte de Montaigu-de-Quercy (a 2 km climb at 4.6%); and at 157 kms, the Cat 4 Côte de Saint-Avit (a 1.8 km climb at 5.8%).Prior to the stage, 55 riders from 6 teams were subjected to blood tests and all were found to be negative. The officials are saying that this shows that doping is a minority issue. We all know better. The doctors from the 20 teams in the Tour also issued a statement of protest that the Festina affair was being generalised to bring their own operations into disrepute. They argue that it was the teams that had pressured the UCI for blood testing. The statement said: "... from next season, a personal health card for riders will be created which will improve prevention thanks to checks of the biological and functional parameters of cyclists." Festina fans waved banners along the Stage 8 roads to protest against the decision to expel the team. "Free the Festina" was the catchcry. The main "rational" sentiment was that the decision was selective and other teams, particularly, TVM should have also been expelled. This came after the revelation that a large quantity of drugs were seized by French police in March from a TVM vehicle returning from Spain. This case has now been re-opened following a suggestion that the cops went easy on the team. Jean-Marie LeBlanc mounted the same defence that he did last week when he said TVM would stay because the incident was a "long way from the Tour" (in March). Ho hum. Under hot sun, Stage 8 was marked by a major breakaway of 6 riders - Laurent Desbiens, Jacky Durand, Andrea Tafi, Fabio Sacchi, Philippe Gaumont, Eddy Mazzoleni and Joona Laukka - from the 74 kms mark. They stayed away until the end and Jacky Durand (Casino) won the sprint with Desbiens (28) taking the maillot jeune. Desbiens won a stage last year (at Perpignan) and told the media: "I won a stage last year and I was hoping to do the same again this season. But this is even better." It was also a chance for Desbiens to show that the cloud over his past was gone. His stage win last year was questionable (Ukrainian Serguei Outschakov was disqualified if you recall) and in 1996 he tested positive to the steroid nandrolone. Last year, Durand watched the Tour on TV after being dropped by his team director Vincent Lavenu wrong. He said after the win that: "I attacked every day since the start of the Tour...I knew my chance would come. It hurt me a lot last year and I'm not the kind of rider to sit on a defeat. I think I deserved to be here this year, didn't I?" He signed with Casino in 1996 but had a fairly easy winter. By spring 1997 his shape had changed and he was carrying more than 15 extra kilos. He explains: "I had a winter a little like Ullrich. I had become very heavy. But by June I was back to normal weight." However, it didn't impress the manager Vincent Lavenu who did not select him for the Tour. Meanwhile Bernard Hinault and Laurent Fignon, both past winners of the Tour called for the suppliers of the drugs to be eliminated and the investigation to "go until the end." Nothing must block justice they said. They say it is the companies and suppliers rather than the riders who are to blame.
