Stage 21 Brief:The parade into Paris. It was wet and generally a boring end to the Tour. The drugs have overshadowed the interest in the racing for many people. The sprint was notable in that Zabel was completely outpositioned. GAN via Poli, then Backstedt tried to get Stuart O'Grady up and almost succeeded.Marco Pantini (28), the first pure climber to win the Tour since Lucien van Impe (Belgium) won in 1976, told the press after the race that despite the drugs scandals the race was probably the "cleanest" for many editions. He said: The fear of police has without any doubt made this Tour cleaner. It was very special psychologically and nervously because we suffered from this situation. No sport can be compared with this as we lived three weeks of intense competition with, on top of it, doping problems and police threats." Pantani has become a bit of an eccentric with his dress and social habits, like playing guitar and singing in night clubs during the winter, but says that he does cycling his own way. He told the press that: I'm not like the other riders in the world of cycling but I've managed to settle in. I go out, I do what young men of my age do and that's my way to be a cyclist. Martinelli [Pantani's team manager] has sometimes struggled to understand me and my father gets mad because I won't go to bed early but I need this freedom." He is the first Italian to win the Tour for 33 years (Felice Gimondi being the last), and the first for 46 years to win the Giro-Tour double (Fausto Coppi having done that in 1952). Pantani, who also won this year's Giro d'Italia, stands out from the rest of the bunch as did Felice Gimondi, the last Italian Tour winner 33 years ago, and Fausto Coppi, the last Italian to win both the Giro and Tour in 1952. Pantani dedicated his victory to Luciano Pezzi, the recently-deceased boss of Mercatone Uno (who ironically was also a teammate of Coppi in 1952 and a manager of Gimondi's team when he won the Tour in 1965). Pantani says that it was Pezzi who inspired him to continue after his terrible injuries in 1996. Pantani admitted to the press that he was tired from his Giro win. He only aimed to win a mountain stage or two. He said: "In the 20 days of a stage race, you go through ups and downs. In the first week of the Tour, I really did not think I could win but deep inside there was an open window with a light of hope coming through it. I suffered a lot in the Giro for it was my main goal of the season. I was more relaxed and more intelligent in the Tour. I shot three arrows in the three mountain stages. The Galibier was the key to my victory. It was an exceptional day, a great performance which changed everything. Despite earlier reports, it is unlikely he will ride the Vuelta. Summary Data- Pantani is the first Italian in 33 years to win the Tour. The last winner was Felice Gimondi in 1965. The top 10 were: 2 Poulidor, 3 Motta, 4 Anglade, 5 Lebaube, 6 Perez-Frances, 7 De Rosso, 8 Brands, 9 Janssen, 10 Gabica).- Pantani is the 7th rider in history who has won the Giro and Tour de France in the same year.
