Stage 18 Brief:Four climbs in this stage that takes the riders into Switzerland. At 39 kms comes the Cat 4 Côte de Corbonod (a 2.1 km climb at 5.6%), then at 66 kms comes the Cat 3 La Grande Côte (a 3.3 km climb at 5.3%). At 104.5 kms the Cat 2 Côte de Vattay (La Faucille) (a 26.7 km climb at 2.7%) in encountered, and finally, the Cat 4 Col du Pétra-Félix (a 2.8 km climb at 4.7%) comes at the 150.4 kms mark.After the events of yesterday, Stage 18 has started with 103 riders. Soon after Stephane Barthe abandoned leaving 102. Marc Madiot of Française des Jeux was back in the peloton later in this afternoon. 10 meters across the border into Switzerland, Jeroen Blijlevens (TVM) abandoned the Tour. He was seen crying in the team car after the symbolic act. He told Dutch radio: "I wasn't motivated anymore. I was demoralized after the last days. It was so intimidating. The judicial officials can do anything they want to you in France. They can say that they found everything in our blood or urine to get you to talk. The tests were not done properly, it was so amateurish. In the neutral zone, I decided to stop just over the border. I will go to Reims on Monday, because I don't have anything to hide. But if they do not change the way they treat riders here then I will not come back to the Tour de France next year.' Bart Voskamp (TVM) said on Dutch radio at the finish in Switzerland: "I'm glad to be on neutral territory." As to the day's racing, well Belgian Tom Steels took his 3rd stage in a mass sprint from Erik Zabel, and Australian Stuart O'Grady. The highlight was the long 4-man break which went away early and was caught just 6 kms from the finish. The four riders Christophe Mengin, Cedric Vasseur and Laurent Desbiens, and Massimo Donati worked hard to build up a maximum gap of 5.47. Once the sprinter's teams got moving it was just a matter of time before they would be caught. Pantani retains yellow.
