Stages and Riders
Stage 1 Brief:The first stage started at 11.15 local time and is expected to finish around 15.51. It is a 180 kms journey starting and finishing in Dublin. The principal difficulty comes at the 111 kms mark when the riders encounter the Wicklow Gap - a 6.8 km Cat 3 climb with an average gradient of 5.1%.The first stage was races in difficult conditions (wind and rain) and was in general very interesting. After an early period of calm, Jackie Durand (Casino) attacked and was joined by 6 riders at the 31 kms mark. Francisco Benitez (Vitalico), Jens Voigt (Gan), Mirco Crepaldi (Polti), Jackie Durand (Casino), Paul Van Hyfte (Lotto), Stéfano Zanini (Mapei) and José De Los Angeles (Kelme), worked well together and soon had a 3 minute gap on the peloton. On the only difficulty of the day (at km 111), the Cat 3 Col de Wicklow Gap, they lost more than a minute of their gap. Following the descent, Saeco worked hard in the peloton and reduced the gap even further. At the last sprint bonus around 50 kms from the end, they only had 30 seconds left. The sprinter's teams were now working hard and at 8 kms to go, their plans came unstuck when a large crash occurred. Both Mario Cipollini and French sprinter Stépahne Barthe (Casino) fell. They did not contest the final sprint and lost more than a minute overall. Mapei sprinter Tom Steels (Belgium), riding in his second Tour won the stage in Dublin and made some personal amends for his unseemly demise in last year's edition. He was banned form the race last year after throwing his bidon at Frederic Moncassin in the final sprint into Marennes. Today, he beat favourite for the green sprinter's jersey Erik Zabel (Germany, Telekom) and Australian Robbie McEwen (Rabobank). The 180 kms stage ended in a mass sprint as was expected. If Super Mario had not have lost time it was likely that he would have taken the yellow jersey. His prologue time was only 13 seconds behind Boardman. As it is, Boardman maintains a 4 second lead over Spaniard Abraham Olano. Steels is reported as saying: I learnt a lot from what happened last year. I got a bit carried away, that's why I blew a fuse. Tour sprints are always difficult because the best sprinters are here, and others try their luck making it dangerous." Meanwhile back at the drug's scandal, Festina have handed the matter over to their legal team. A soigneur and personal carer for Richard Virenque was sprung last Thursday, driving a Festina team car near Lille and carrying a large quantity of EPO, steroids and syringes. All for his personal use, of-course. A French newspaper, La Voix du Nord reported yesterday that the team HQ was raided in Lyon and bottles of drugs with specific rider's names on them (all the stars) were found. The soigneur has now been charged with possession of illegal products. Festina manager Bruno Roussel is reported to have said: "We were frightened by some of the things we read in the press, which were libellous and defamatory. We have engaged a lawyer in Paris who will decide what action to take to protect our name." Festina is already involved in a drug's case with its Criterium International winner, Christophe Moreau already returning two positives this year. He is appealing the findings.
