Leeuwse Pijl, NE

Belgium, September 19, 1998

Brief:

With 90 kms still to ride, 4 riders - Gianni Rivera, Bart Heirewegh, Franky De Buyst and Lars Michaelson attacked and built up a gap of 3 minutes. But in the final stages, a group of 9 riders, all working hard, cut that margin to less than 30 seconds. One of the 9, Darius Strole worked alone and bridged the gap and contested the final sprint with the top 4 riders. Heirewegh was the fastest at the end. He said after taking his 4th victory for the season: "This is clearly my second peak for the season. During May and June I was only playing really, but the work built a strong basis for the end of the season. I now want to win a 5th race for the year. Next year I hope to remain in good form. As a typical kermis racer I am hoping I can get into a better team. I must now seek a new contract."
