BriefSpanish rider Txema Del Olmo (Euskaltel-Euskadi) won the 177 kms Stage 8 from Chambéry to Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse and his compatriat and teammate, Joseba Beloki took over the race leadership. In heavy rain, they arrived together with Frenchman Christophe Rinero (Cofidis). Beloki has held the mountain's jersey since Thursday and was very strong on the Cat 1 Col du Granier and put distance between his key rivals. Christophe Rinero, also an excellent climber, who won the stage on Thursday into Chambéry, was able to hold the wheels of the two storming Basques. The three riders built up a 7 minute lead over the peloton before Txema Del Olmo won the three-up sprint. The leader overnight, Daniel Schnider (Post Swiss Team) went out the back big-time and lost 21.40 and dropped to 15th on GC. The Tour is now a race between the three breakaways - the final day will tell which will triumph. The big news of the stage though was the continuing presence of drugs in the sport. French customs officials discovered illegal drugs in the van of the Cofidis cycling team the day before. The drugs were found in the bags of riders in the town of Thonon-les-Bains (which is on the Swiss-France border). Earlier this week, another Cofidis rider left the Vuelta amidst a drug scandal (Philippe Gaumont). Stage 8, Chambery - St.-Pierre-de-Chartreuse, 177 kms:1.
