BriefAt 10 kms, Berges attacked. He was first over the climb. On the descent of the Col de Richemond, 5 riders go away - Rengli, Beloki, Del Olmo, Loder and Jones.As the riders approach the first sections of the Col du Grand Colombier, the leader overnight, Langella got into difficulties. 5 kms from the top, Beloki, Del Olmo and Jones drop their breakaway companions. On the descent they had a lead of 1.37 on a group of 8 riders - Rinero, Schnider, Montgomery, Reggli, Zubeldia, Loder, Mulhbacher and Mizourov. Langella's group was by this time 3.30 down on the leading trio. On the descent, Jones crashed and was forced to abandon the race. Zubeldia and Montgomery were also dropped from the chasing bunch. Buxhofer was able to get across to this chasing group. At the 72 kms mark (Lucey), Rinero's group caughts the breakaways and there were then 9 riders leading the race. The group with Langella was 1.20 down. But Langella's pain worsened as he was dropped from the chasing group and by the 95 kms mark he was 3.30 down. The top group worked together perfectly and they steadily built up their lead on the chasing group. By the sprint at Domessin (108 kms) it was 3.20, then 3.35 at Saint-Béron (114 kms), 4.00 at the top of the la Côte de Saint-Franc and 5.10 at Aiguebelette (133 kms). At the foot of the Col de l'Epine, Christophe Rinero attacked. Only Beloki and Del Olmo could hold his wheel. The 3 riders were chased by Schnider and Loder.
