Matheson, Andy GBR Scotland 1.15.39 Stage 5, Birmingham - Cardiff kms:The fifth stage was suspended on Thursday after the death of a police escort. A statement from the organisers said a fatal accident involving a member of the Police National Escort Group had occurred during the stage from Birmingham to Cardiff.The police motorcyclist was killed in a road accident when riding ahead of the peloton. David Hopkins, 41, an experienced escort rider, hit a car driven by a local resident. He was declared dead on arrival at the Worcestor hospital. The accident occurred 58 km into the 207 km fifth stage from Birmingham to Cardiff. Racing was suspended and riders waited with their team cars for almost an hour while officials debated if the race could continue. It was finally decided to abandon the stage and riders completed the route by car. Britain's Chris Boardman was reported as saying: "The riders were as devastated as anyone and were happy to go along with the organisers' wishes, although we were aware that a lot of people waiting at the finish would be disappointed. All of us on the race, including the police are volunteers, and are here because we want to be here. Any sport that involves speed has an element of risk to it. Tragically from time to time there are accidents and that is what happened today." This is the second mishap for the race. On Stage 3, the peloton went in the wrong direction and lost more than 30 minutes before returning to the correct parcours. Racing rsumes on Friday when the 90 riders left from the original 108 starters contest a 146 km leg from Bristol to Reading. With stage five scrapped, Stuart O'Grady of Australia leads by 21 seconds from Boardman, with Dariusz Baranowski of Poland third at 35 seconds. Stage 6, Bristol - Reading, 146 kms:1.
