Gommers, Grentienus NED Holland 26.30 Brief Chris Boardman today maintained his lead of the inaugral Prutour, winning the first stage of the race, which took the cyclists on a gruelling 128 mile journey from Edinburgh to Newcastle. This was Boardman's second win in two days, having taken the Prudential red leader's jersey in yesterday's Prologue time trial in Stirling. His victory marked only the second time in his professional career that he has won a stage in a road race, time trial being his speciality. Close on Boardman's tail were Festina's Andre Korff in second place, followed by fellow GAN teamate, Stuart O'Grady. In what was expected to be one of the hardest finishes of the race, comprising three circuits on the cobbled Newcastle city centre, Boardman held on to the red leader's jersey with only one second between himself and Korff. Boardman overcame the challenges presented by this particularly tough stage, which included three King of the Mountains climbs and a series of sprints. The Polka Dot Jersey for the King of the Mountains finally went to David McKenzie riding for Australia, while The Purple Sprint jersey was taken by Stuart O'Grady. With a narrow but significant lead, Boardman tomorrow tackles stage two of the Prutour, from Gateshead to York, covering over 105 miles of road racing terrain. All eyes will be on the man wearing the red leader's jersey as he tackles the notorious Rosedale Chimney, a 1 in 4 climb. Official results from Seamus Shortall |
