Brief

French rider Philippe Gaumont, from the Cofidis team, stormed home in the sprint to win the first stage into Carcassonne of the Midi Libre. His teammate Nicolas Jalaber was second and François Simon (Gan) third

The 171 kms long stage had some difficulties for the riders, with the Cat 2 Portel (2e catégorie) being the toughest. But it was the intense heat that took its toll. The stage started in Rivesaltes, in the Eastern Pyrénées.

Philippe Gaumont said at the end: "It is one of the best victories that I have ever had. After being injured at the start of the season I have been content to follow the great classics on TV. And to prepare for the Midi Libre, I have only 27 days of training. It is not much. But today, in a series of attacks on the côtes, I have concluded that I have some form. The win just came like that."

On Wednesday, the second stage over 204 kms will encounter many along the way from Carcassonne to Rodez.

Brief

French rider Christophe Rinero (Cofidis) took the leader's jersey in the GP du Midi Libre today when he won the sprint for the second stage. The Cofidis rider took the jersey from his teammate Philippe Gaumont, the winner of stage 1 to Carcassonne. The sprint was contested between Rinero, Sébastien Hinault (GAN), Laurent Dufaux (Festina) and Italian rider Marco Milesi (Brescialat).

These four riders went away with 26 kms to go after being part of a larger breakaway group. The biggest surprise of the day came from the Italian Alberto Elli (Casino) who conceded 18 minutes to Rinéro.

Christophe Rinéro said after the stage: "It is true that I have had a great stage today. But it remains to be seen if I can retain the jersey tomorrow with the 24 kms ITT. I have to go all out, but I think with less than 10 seconds on the specialists like Dufaux, it will be a great challenge."

Brief

Spanish rider Melchior Mauri, from ONCE won the third stage of the GP du Midi libre with an imposing perfomance in Rodez in the 24 kms ITT and this allowed Swiss rider, Laurent Dufaux, third on the day, the take the yellow jersey.

Taking second place on GC, Mauri was the only one of 145 riders to go under 30 minutes (29.39). His average speed was 48.561 km/h, on a relatively flat circuit in hot sun.

Winner of the first stage to Carcassonne, Philippe Gaumont (Cofidis) was second but he is languishing in 79th place in GC due to a very bad day in the second stage. Dufaux (Festina) is 11 seconds ahead of Mauri. French rider Christophe Rinero (Cofidis), winner of the stage yesterday and overnight GC leader dropped to third on GC at 24 seconds.

Mauri said at the finish: "I have the impression that I fulfilled my contract today. With this GP, where all the sprinters are involved, the ITT was our objective. But the race is far from won. Tomorrow the big tests arrive. There will be 2 Cat 1 climbs and on Saturday, the Saint-Clair mountain finish, and on Sunday, Sète. This is a hors category climb."

Festina are expected to take control of the race during Stage 4 on Friday over 208 kms from Laissac to Nîmes. The stage includes two Cat 1 Cols which will allow the climbers of Festina, including Richard Virenque and Laurent Brochard to catch up to teammate Dufaux. The stage will determine the outcome of this 50th Midi Libre.

Brief

Frenchman Damien Nazon (La Française des Jeux) won the sprint to take the fourth stage of the GP du Midi Libre, over 208 kms between Laissac (Aveyron) and Nîmes (Gard), with Laurent Dufaux (Festina) retaining the yellow jersey he won the day before in Rodez.

Nason beat François Simon (GAN) and Nicolas Jalabert (Cofidis). Laurent Dufaux got through the stage without damage and finished in 15th place on the same time as the winner.

With 5 kms to go, the peloton caught two attackers, Belgian Steve De Wolf (Lotto) and the Swiss rider Daniel Paradis (Team Post Swiss), who had been away for nearly 90 kms.

The difficulty for the day came as they entered the Department of the Gard, where the riders had to cross a Cat 2 and a Cat 3 mountain.

The 5th stage is between Nîmes and Mende (180 km), and finishes on the Cat 1 climb of La Croix Neuve (1053 m).

Brief

Swiss rider Laurent Dufaux (Festina) reinforced his position in the GC of the 50th Grand Prix du Midi libre by winning Stage 5 to Mende. Third in the Vuelta in 1997, and recently, the winner of the Tour of Romandie, Laurent Dufaux has led this race since Thursday. He won this stage after a strong attack on the summit of the Cat 1 côte at the end and held off his most dangerous rival in the race Christophe Rinero (Cofidis) who is comfortably installed in second place.

"I had said three days ago that Christophe Rinero was my biggest rival. This stage confirmed that." explained Laurent Dufaux after his win. "Christophe is a very nice rider. And moreover, the race is being held in the South-West where he is from. I therefore made this stage the one where I would consolidate the final GC. It was good to get away on with him on the col. I would have preferred to have been alone, but Rinero was vigilant trying to keep his GC gap. With 200 metres left, I knew I had the win. This victory has made me feel great. But it is also confirmation of the work that my team has done for me all day. It is new for me.

The 128 riders left in the Midi Libre will ride the last stage on Sunday over 208.5 kms from Mende to Sète with two climbs up Saint-Clair (hors catégorie), and gives the last chance for the climbers like Richard Virenque. Virenque is 3rd on GC less than two minutes from the leader.

Stage 6, Florac - Sète-Mont-Saint-Clair, 208.5 kms:

 1. Laurent Brochard (Fra) Festina 4.46.07
 2. Gilles Bouvard (Fra) Casino 0.03

Brief

Swiss rider Laurent Dufaux won the GP du Midi Libre. The only threat could have come on the climb of Mont Saint-Clair which had to be twice. Teammate Laurent Brochard, won the stage controlled by the Festina team. They fixed their objective to protect Dufaux over the 208.5 kms and it was only the hot sun in the end which presented any difficulties.

Only Gilles Bouvard challenged the hegemony of the Festina team and came in second on the stage. Richard Virenque, went over the top of Mont Saint-Clair the first time with the rest of the train some metres behind. Despite the Festina dominance, local rider Christophe Rinéro took second place on GC.

Dufaux said after the stage: "You think that I would not be happy? Well I am more than happy, and more than reassured. With my form and my team. They functioned marvellously during the 6 days. This morning, I had only to control Rinéro. If I could have won the stage then I would have taken it. I will not ride the Dauphine but I have the Tour de Suise, and then, the Tour de France."
