BriefAmerican Dede Demet (Saturn) secured a place in history as she won the inaugural UCI Women’s World Cup road event March 29.
Competing in a star-studded field which included Olympic champion Jeannie Longo (Giant World) of France and the two most recent world road champions, Alessandra Cappellotto (Dream Team) of Italy and Barbara Heeb (Giant World) of Switzerland, Demet earned the victory in the first such event for women.
Riders competed on a short, 2.8km loop in downtown, covering the course 35 times. With about 20 laps to go, Demet broke away with Pam Schuster (Saeco- Timex) and world road silver medalist Elizabeth Tadich (Jayco-VIS) of Australia.
The women’s field was a mix of national and trade teams and the Saturn, Saeco-Timex and Australian teams blocked effectively to make the break stick.
With just over 10 laps remaining, Edita Pucinskaite (Lithuania) -- the 1997 CoreStates Liberty winner -- began a bridge attempt. She was joined by Karen Kurreck (Saturn), but the pair never got closer than 1:30 behind the lead trio.
With 400m left in the race, Demet and Schuster pulled away from Tadich, with the 1996 U.S. road race champion winning the sprint.
Kurreck won the sprint for fourth, and Karen Bliss Livingston (Saturn) topped Kendra Wenzel (Saeco-Timex) in the field sprint, giving the U.S. five of the top seven finishers.
The second round of the UCI Women’s World Cup is the First Union Liberty Classic, June 7, in Philadelphia.
