Brief

The Omloop van de Veenkolonieën is organised by the RTC De Stormvogels of Veendam and is a round in the Elite Club Competition. The 158 kms race started and finished in the Winkler Prinsstraat in Veendam which is in the north east of the Netherlands.

The name of the race literally means the "Race of the Fen land community". In this part of the Netherlands they used to dig peat until it eventually ran out. With the loss of income from peat the area is very poor now relative to the Netherlands in general and there is a lot of unemployment.

In the last kilometers Marcel Nagengast had a little gap on the peloton. In the last corner it was Martijn Vos who closed the gap. In the sprint Herman Fledderus was too strong for Australian Baden Burke.
