Vlaamse Pijl

Belgium, March 8, 1998

Brief:

The Kortrijkse Groeninge-spurters remain the successful team. With the win of Christoph Roodhooft in Brussel-Opwijk, they dominated the Vlaamse Pijl, a race for elites and neo-amateurs under the guidance of Dirk Demol. The duo of Geoffrey Demeyere-Stijn Devolder helped each to take the top two positions on Sunday. With less than half the race gone, a break of 4 riders went away: Geoffrey Demeyere, Stijn De Volder, Jurgen Guns and Oliver Penney. The clubs of Kortrijk, Merelbeke and the Merckxboys working to stop the break the 4 built a gap of less that half a minute. But eventually Guns and Penney were dropped by attacks from Demeyere and then De Volder. The Kortrijkse teammates rode together to the end. Both were tired from the break but Demeyere came across the line first.
