Brief

The race director of the International Women's Tour in NZ has suggested that the prizemoney could be cut by up to 75 per cent to punish the riders for slow riding. On the third stage from Te Aroha to Hamilton (115km) which was flat and raced in still conditions the average speed was only 34 km/h. 43 riders recorded the same time as the winners which is rare in women's racing. There were no attempts to attack the peloton despite the wide range of skills between the riders.

Brief

33-year old Ellie Kennedy from Queensland who has only been riding at top level in women's cycling for 12 months continued to hold onto to the narrowest of leads in the Classic. She took the GC lead in the hilly first stage and has defended it admirably since then with the help of a strong team.

She has former Olympian Tracy Gaudry, Kim Palmer (National team member and sprint ace) and Juanita Feldhan supporting her. She said about this: "I've got some very strong teammates around me and they're looking after me. I don't think they expected it to turn out this way either. I expected one of them to have the yellow jersey because it's a very strong team. I was prepared to work for them and now they're having to teach me an awful lot very, very quickly. So it's putting a strain on them but they're really working well," Kennedy said.

Anna Wilson continued to dominate the Mountains and sprint competitions. She said that Kennedy is riding very strongly and is learning fast. "Ellie's learning a lot. Even the difference between two days ago and now is noticeable. She's learned how the team works best for her and how she can conserve as much as she can for when the crunch really comes."

Tomorrow the big stage will be over French Pass from Hamilton to Hautapu. It is 106 kms in total and very tough.

Brief

Overnight leader Ellie Kennedy from Queensland crashed on the tricky descent of French Pass only 15 kms from the line to give the lead to New Zealand's Susy Pryde. She crashed with the South African rider Anke Erlank who had been leading the Under-21 classification. Both riders were taken to Waikato Hospital. Erlank sustained the most serious injuries - broken collar bone and serious cuts. Kennedy sustained cuts and a muscle injury. Both will miss the World Cup race in Sydney at the weekend.

Pryde was reported in the local media as expressing regret over the circumstances that saw her take the leader's jersey. She said: "It's quite a horrible way to go into the lead and there'll be a heavy feeling among the peloton tomorrow I think. You never want to take the yellow jersey that way,."

Kennedy was protecting her lead strongly throughout the stage. She was devastated later.

Dede Demet from the US won the stage alone after dropping a fancied group of riders on French Pass. 24 other riders sprinted for second with Diana Ziliote leading in last year's winner Anna Wilson. Pryde was next.

Wilson won the mountain and sprint classification.

Brief

At the start of the final day -- which included two stages -- Holden was third overall, but she moved into second overall at the end of the morning stage, an 80km road race.

Holden then won the final stage, an 18km individual time trial by 12 seconds over her closest competitor, defending Street Skills champ Anna Wilson (Jayco- VIS) of Australia. Heading into the final stage, Holden trailed Susy Pryde (Saeco-Timex) of New Zealand by 10 seconds, but Pryde finished fifth in the time trial, 1:24 behind the two-time U.S. individual time trial champion. Holden finished 34 seconds ahead of Wilson in the overall standings and 43 seconds ahead of American Elizabeth Emery (Saturn), New York, N.Y.

It is the first international overall victory for Holden, who recently won the overall title at the Redlands Bicycle Classic, one of the largest stage races in the United States.

Holden will join the German Cratoni-Hawk team for the bulk of her season, which should include the two major women’s Tours, the Tour Feminin in France and the Giro d’Italia Femminile.
