Bartoli fights bronchitis

Michele Bartoli suffers from bronchitis and has had a relapse in recent days. The rider from Pisa has told the press: "I can't breathe well when I push myself. I have hade penicillin injections. But I'm not too worried, since there are still 5 days to go for San Remo. On Monday I trained for two hours with Tani. Tomorrow I will train with David Tani, Luca Scinto, Paolo Bettini, Federico Colonna and even with Mario Cipollini and must do a 6 to 6.5 hour ride. On Thursday I have another appointment of 4 hours". Bartoli's teammates for San Remo will be Paolo Bettini, Carlo Marino Bianchi, Federico Colonna, Michele Coppolillo, Andrea Noč, Luca Scinto and David Tani.

Pantani

Marco Pantani is now in intense training as the classics season rapidly approaches. Marco trained 7 hours on Saturday, 5 on Sunday and two on Monday in the company of Marcello Siboni, Biagio Conti, Fabiano Fontanelli and Davide Dall'Olio. Today there is another important training ride scheduled. Mercatone Uno has narrowed the names that will go to San Remo - Pantani, Dimitri Konyshev, Riccardo Forconi, Marco Fincato, Fabiano Fontanelli Mario Traversoni with only two more to be chosen from Marco Artunghi, Marco Velo and Stefano Checchin.

Lance and Jan Ullrich out of Milan-San Remo

Lance Amstrong will not ride next Saturday's Milan-San Remo. The American rider has cancelled from the first World Cup event of the season as he has not fully recovered from the flu he came down with during Paris-Nice. In the second stage of the race to the sun he retired.

Another notable scratching is Jan Ullrich, who will miss Saturday's Milan-San Remo classic because of his current poor form. His Deutsche Telekom team announced this yesterday. The 1997 Tour de France winner, who has suffered from influenza in the last few weeks, retired during the first stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico race last week. He is also still looking fat.
