US Postal after Paris-Nice

The United States Postal Service Pro Cycling Team's George Hincapie sprinted to a fourth place finish in yesterday's eighth and final stage of the Paris-Nice stage race. Hincapie's fourth place effort in the 161.4 kilometer stage was his fourth top-12 stage placing of the event and the team's second top-10 stage finish. In the general classification, the U.S. Postal Service team was led by Viatcheslav Ekimov in 19th overall, 2:30 seconds behind race winner Frank Vandenbroucke of Mapei. Hincapie, with 11th place finishes in stages one and three and a 12th place effort in stage four, placed 51st overall, 12:56 back of Vandenbroucke.

Hincapie's race began with a fine performance in the 10.2 km stage one time trial in Paris on March 8. Hincapie finished 28 seconds back of stage winner Vandenbroucke and just eight seconds behind third place. Ekimov placed 16th in the stage, at 34 seconds, while teammate Lance Armstrong finished 23rd, at 41 seconds. However, Hincapie flatted early in stage two, a 170.2 km race from Montreau to Sens. Several USPS riders, including Armstrong, dropped back to help bring the team's top sprinter back to the peloton. After several hours or chasing against fierce cross winds, Armstrong pulled off and eventually stopped, thus dropping out of the race. Ekimov finished the stage in 21st place among a group of 22 riders at five seconds while Hincapie crossed the line at 52 seconds.

Hincapie then sprinted to 11th and 12th place finishes in stage three and four, respectively. Vandenbroucke, in the lead jersey throughout, added to his lead with a victory in weather-shortened stage five, which finished with a climb of the Col de la Republique. With freezing rain and snow falling on the riders, Ekimov climbed to a 35th place stage finish, 1:39 back of Vandenbroucke. Following the stage, Ekimov fell to 23rd overall but was able to make up four places before yesterday's final stage to move into the top 20. Ekimov's best stage placing came in the sixth stage when he finished eighth. This year's Paris-Nice failed to include the traditional final stage time trial, which was won by Ekimov last year. Although disappointed with the decision not include the time trial in this year's race, Ekimov is confident he will be in top form for the upcoming World Cup schedule, specifically for the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix, schedule for April 5th and 12th, respectively.
